Notorious revolves around the symbiotic relationship between a charismatic defense attorney (Daniel Sunjata) and a powerhouse TV producer (Piper Perabo) as they attempt to control the media, the justice system, and each other. Together, they make great TV and determine the nation’s headlines. The rest of the cast includes Kate Jennings Grant, Aimee Teegarden, J. August Richards, Sepideh Moafi, Ryan Guzman, and Kevin Zegers.
Sandwiched between Grey’s Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder, Notorious launched to a 1.13 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.39 million viewers. It was a disappointing start, especially considering that lead-in Grey’s drew more than twice as many viewers in the demo with a 2.89 rating.
The second installment fell to a 1.06 rating with 4.51 million. Episode three also fell and the fourth installment dropped to a 0.83 in the demo with 3.90 million. Notorious is currently the network’s lowest-rated new series and very well may be dragging How to Get Away with Murder down in the ratings with it.
It is worth noting that the four Thursday nights of the 2016-17 season have been dominated by NFL football. ABC may want to wait and see how well Notorious performs without that competition but it seems unlikely to help. CBS sitcoms are also quite strong competition.
The network execs may also try moving Murder to 9pm and shift Notorious to 10pm. That’s unlikely to help the latter because there are fewer people watching TV in the 10pm hour.
At this point, it looks like ABC won’t order any additional episodes and Notorious will be cancelled after one short season of 13 episodes.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Notorious TV show on ABC? Should it be cancelled or should the network order more episodes? Cancel or keep it?
10/25 update: ABC has cut the first season order to 10 episodes. Cancellation next?
