Son of Zorn: Co-Creator Leaves New FOX Animated Comedy

Son of Zorn TV show on FOX season 1 (canceled or renewed?)

Variety reports Eli Jorne has left the Son of Zorn TV show at FOX. The new live-action/animated comedy comes from executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller and 20th Century FoX Television. Son of Zorn was co-created by Jorne and his Wilfred partner, Reed Agnew. The duo also wrote the pilot .

The cast of Son of Zorn includes Jason Sudeikis, Johnny Pemberton, Cheryl Hines, and Tim Meadows. The series is scheduled to debut during the 2016-2017 season. According to the report, Jorne’s exit, which is said to be over creative differences, will not delay the series.

Here is more, from Variety:

The duo was originally set as co-showrunners on the series, before Sally McKenna came in when Agnew stepped down as co-showrunner, remaining as an exec producer on the show. For now, McKenna will take on sole showrunner duties and exec produce alongside Agnew, Chris Miller and Phil Lord (“Last Man on Earth”), Seth Cohen and Eric Appel.

Jorne’s departure follows a trend that boomed last broadcast season when a slew of showrunners exited series, before they premiered. Last year, NBC’s “Chicago Med,” Fox’s “The Grinder” and ABC’s “Blood & Oil” and “The Catch” all parted ways with showrunners, but still made it on air for the 2015-16 season.

FOX has ordered SON OF ZORN, a new live-action/animated hybrid comedy from executive producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, “The Lego Movie”), it was announced today by David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX).

Upon arriving home on Earth for the first time in 10 years, ZORN (the voice of Jason Sudeikis, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, “Saturday Night Live”), a fully animated, legendary warrior, finds that reconnecting with his live-action son, ALAN (Johnny Pemberton, “21 Jump Street”), and ex-wife, EDIE (Cheryl Hines, “Curb Your Enthusiasm”), while suffering through a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life, is harder than waging actual war in his distant, mystical homeland of Zephyria. Tim Meadows (“Saturday Night Live”) also stars. The series is scheduled to debut during the 2016-2017 season.

“This is utterly unique – there has literally never been a show like this. And, of course, it is very, very funny,” said Madden. “The fantastically talented duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller are yet again delivering precedent-setting television. Jason Sudeikis makes his animated character sound and feel live-action, and Cheryl, Johnny and Tim have incredible chemistry with him that crosses formats, genres and galaxies.”

SON OF ZORN is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne (“Wilfred”) wrote the pilot. Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Seth Cohen (THE LAST MAN ON EARTH) will executive-produce, alongside Agnew and Jorne, who will serve as showrunners. Eric Appel (BROOKLYN NINE-NINE) is director and executive producer.
