The Conners: Season Five; Michael Fishman Departs ABC Comedy Series

The Conners TV Show on ABC: canceled or renewed?

The Conners is losing one of its original cast members. Per TV Line, Michael Fishman is departing the ABC family comedy, but the door is being left open for him to return as a guest. He has played the role of DJ Conner since he started on Roseanne as the youngest Conner child.

Though he has been a series regular on The Conners, Fishman has only appeared in 36 of the 71 episodes. He has directed five episodes of the comedy. According to a statement to People, Fishman “was told I would not be returning for season 5.” He also wrote:

“While I wholeheartedly will miss Friday night tapings in front of our loyal audiences, alongside our amazing cast and crew, I am excited for the opportunities coming in the next chapter of my career. I have a number of projects I am pitching as a writer, and am negotiating my next directing opportunities. Although I no longer have the privilege to portray D.J., my desire, passion, and skill of bringing characters to life as an actor continues. I appreciate all those who support and have supported my work.”

The young actress who plays his daughter, Jayden Rey, is not exiting the series, however. She will remain a series regular. Earlier reports stated she would also depart the ABC comedy.

John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Emma Kenney, Ames McNamara, and Jay R. Ferguson are returning as series regulars for season five of The Conners. Katey Sagal is also returning as a recurring guest, as Louise, Dan’s second wife.

The Conners returns to ABC with its fifth season on September 21st.

What do you think? Are you disappointed that Fishman is departing The Conners?
