CW Ratings Race: A Good Thing Gossip Girl Is Ending

Gossip Girl endingThough some fans are understandably sad that Gossip Girl is ending, it’s actually a good thing. The ratings have come way down and are particularly bad this season. It’s got the smallest audience on the network — even worse than Nikita on Friday nights.

If the network hadn’t announced this would be the last season of Gossip Girl, they surely would have cancelled it this year, not allowing the cast and a crew a chance to craft a (hopefully) satisfying final season and last episode.

Since the last edition of the Ratings Race, several shows have seen slight declines or gains in their season-to-date averages. Those that gained are The Vampire Diaries, Arrow, Supernatural, 90210, and Nikita. Those that lost are Beauty and the Beast and Gossip Girl.

These charts incorporate the daily final CW show ratings (reported by Nielsen) and are sorted by the 18-49 demographic. Network advertisers typically prize those viewers most and so will pay more to reach them. There’s lots of information that the networks take into consideration when cancelling or renewing a TV series but the ratings are the biggest factor. The higher the ratings, the better chance that the show will be renewed. And yes, they take it into account when a show airs on Friday nights
