What’s This TV Show About?

A BBC America police drama, Luther season five stars Idris Elba, Ruth Wilson, Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley, Patrick Malahide, Wunmi Mosaku, Enzo Cilenti, and Hermione Norris. In the fifth season, DCI John Luther (Elba) tackles another string of disturbing murders. He and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Mosaku) must unravel clues and separate fact from fiction to root out corruption. With the victims piling up and criminal George Cornelius (Malahide) turning up the heat, Luther must not only stop this killer but save himself, too.

Telly’s Take

Although it premiered with okay numbers for basic cable, it is still too soon to use the ratings to predict whether BBC America will cancel or renew Luther for season six. I have a feeling Nielsen isn’t exactly deciding this one, anyhow. This is a BBC One series that originates in the UK. BBC America (which is jointly owned by AMC Networks and BBC Studios) just carries it on this side of the pond. Continuation primarily depends on whether the BBC commissions another season. This fifth installment did very well in UK — the best yet. Idris Elba, however, is in high demand, and the concept of seasons (i.e. “series”) in UK is less rigid than here in the States. My prediction is that we’ll get another season (or a movie — an idea that’s been floating around for some time), when Elba is available and creator Neil Cross has an idea. Meanwhile, there could be a spinoff on the way. For now, I’ll keep an eye on the Nielsens and update this page with any developments. Subscribe for free Luther cancellation and renewal alerts.
