A little over a month after the full first season premiered, Amazon has cancelled its Jean-Claude Van Johnson TV show. Because it originally debuted as part of Amazon’s viewer-influenced pilot season, the first episode premiered back in August of 2016, but season one of Jean-Claude Van Johnson just officially kicked off on December 15, 2017.
An Amazon scripted spy comedy, Jean-Claude Van Johnson stars Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kat Foster, Moises Arias, Bar Paly, Tim Peper, Phylicia Rashad, Deren Tadlock, Winston James Francis, Filip Van Damme, and Carlo Rota. While the world knows Jean-Claude Van Damme (Van Damme) as a movie star and martial arts expert, he’s actually a secret agent — who is pulled out of retirement to face his fiercest foe — himself.
Today, Amazon also cancelled Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi and Kevin Bacon’s I Love Dick. On the upside, earlier today, they renewed The Tick for season two. Deadline reports:
Amazon is doing more clearing the decks with the cancellation of three comedy series: Tig Notaro’s One Mississippi, Jill Soloway’s I Love Dick and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson.

“This is part of a move towards bigger, wider-audience series,” an Amazon insider told Deadline.

The cancellation for Van Damme’s Jean-Claude Van Johnson was very swift, coming only a month after the satire was released.
Amazon, which is on the hunt for big, broad drama hits, has dramatically pared down its comedy series slate, once populated heavily of quirky, underrated half-hour shows. Besides Globe-winning Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and just-renewed freshman hit The Tick, all other existing comedy series have been canceled, and the streaming platform also recently opted not to pick up any of the three comedy pilots from its most recent fall pilot season.
What do you think? Have you watched the first and only season of the Jean-Claude Van Johnson TV series? Did this Amazon TV show deserve to be cancelled or renewed for a second season? Sound off, in comments.
