The new Star Trek is still a year away from its release, but there are more teasers for Trekkies anxiously waiting for the return of the franchise to the small screen – even it will be locked by a streaming subscription to CBS All Access.
According to Trek Movie, Nicholas Meyer spoke about the new series in an interview with Den of Geeks. He did not reveal much in the way of real plot, but he did offer some new insight into the return of one of television history’s most popular franchises.
He said:
“I think it’s going to be a different Star Trek. It will go in a different direction. And I think that is probably good. Because the thing that mainly troubles me about Star Trek is the fear of it being maybe re-treads of itself. And to the degree that I had any influence on the thing [Star Trek] at all was that at least while I was there, we were fooling around. And if you’re not fooling around, then things can become stale. And I think that Bryan [Fuller]—who is a very clever fellow—has ideas—some of which I’ve heard—that are innovative and different. Different is what got me interested.”
Meyer also teased that Fuller has mentioned possibly using the Star Trek film, The Undiscovered Country as a jumping off point for the new series. He made it clear that the series could take a different direction entirely before its release in 2017.
Are you excited to see what is done with the new Star Trek? Tell us what you think.
CBS All Access is a no-go for me, so it seems I won’t watch the new Star Trek.
Hated to see TNG end, but tired of both Voyager and DS9 before their run ended. Enterprise explored the early phase of Star Fleet and distrust of Vulcans and was ended too soon. This is a time frame worth exploring, meeting the new civilizations for the first time… But alas not to be seen due to CBS’ move
I’m really excited to see the series return especially now that i’m a Trekkie. When i was a kid (back when it was still on) i never liked ST because i could never understand it, I was too young. Now that i’m older I love Star Trek and i’m really amped to see a new series on air. I agree with Joe that I would love to see a post Voyager series. Voyager is my favorite ST series and i would love to see a series that plays off the books for Voyager. I also liked the rumor that has… Read more »
Undiscovered Country period? That sounds completely awful!
There’s actually quite a wealth of storylines from that era. Stop with the instant criticisms of things you don’t understand. Let them do their jobs.
If they do well, awesome.
If they fail, they’ll learn and try something new in a couple years.
Try some optimism for a change.
Here’s my reasoning:
1. Nick Meyer was director of ST2 TWOK, a writer on ST4 TVH, and director on ST6 TUC.
2. They have one of the writers from DS9.
3. Gene Roddenberry’s son is a producer.
As Spock would say: “Have faith…”
During the Undiscovered Country period? That sounds completely awful! We really have to let them know before they go ahead with those plans.
“During the Undiscovered Country period? That sounds completely awful!”
Why? Because continuing the series during the TNG/DS9/VOY era is safer, or going ‘into the future’ is better somehow?
Just because it may be set during TUC, doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad, far from it in fact!
I would love to see a post Voyager Star Trek, maybe set on the Entperise-J. I think that the 26th century would be awesome.
I am as excited as all heck that Star Trek is coming back to TV.
With that being said, WHY, is it pay per view?
Why do you have to make those of us that are true fans, be the ones to line your pockets?
If you want to make millions off the masses, then put your show on the big screen and sell tickets, that’s justifiable. But to announce it as a TV show and make people pay a fee to watch TV, that’s just being GREEDY.
So you’d rather they do a network show that is reliant on ratings and demographics (something that tends to be insanely hard for sci-fi)?
I am looking forward to this concept. The gap inbetween TOS and TNG is an interesting one, it’s full of falling empires and political shifts and above all, exploration. Everything post DS9/Voy is covered in the CBS endorsed and canonised MMO, we know what happens.
Here we get to see the discovery of major players like the Cardassians, the War between the Klingons and the Romulans,
A new ship with a new crew, in a timeframe that is worth exploring, I look forward to it.
See more of Enterprise B or C.
STO is merely licensed, not canon. CBS could wipe it all out of existence if they wish, just as Disney tossed the EU canon before SW;TFA.
Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with. I don’t think it should be tied to any of the previous timelines, but something different. TNG was a hell of a leap from TOS, but after a while, it became comfortable. Between that, DS9, and Voyager, I’d say we’ve rooted around in that century enough. What was there between the generations? Enterprise barely scratched the surface of what happened before TOS. There are a lot of other options for exploring, here, and I look forward to seeing new Trek adventures.
No. This is unacceptable. The new series should focus on events of the 10th and final true Star Trek series.
If it uses “the undiscovered country” as a jump off could we be looking at a Captain Sulu series?
Using Undiscovered Country as a jumping-off point suggests another Kirk-centric series. Why not go post-Voyager/DS9 and explore some of a new future?
TNG/DS9/VOY was too mambi bambi.
Why is TUC too KIrk centric? It just means that time frame, that era after Kirk and before Picard, that’s it.
Burying a series on a dedicated pay streaming site is a deathnote before it even starts. Netflix = Successful distribution. Cable/CW/etc = Successful distribution. Dedicated single channel content CBS Streaming Service = “Well, no one is watching it so it is obvious no one wants a new Star Trek service, so we’ll just cancel it.”
It reminds me of FOX mentality around something like Firefly. “We don’t want to make this, so lets make sure it fails and then move on to some more reality tv.”
I am excited, but refuse to pay for yet another service so they can get more money out of me. Meh, I’ll wait.
Not many will be watching it at all since it is only be on streaming. Put it on cable, millions will watch it, not just a few who are willing to fork over $$$ for something that should be available on basic cable. I won’t be watching it because I do not do streaming that costs too much for nothing.
I will definitely be watching. I have basic cable. And I watch new stuff on Netflix for free. But I will definitely pay the price for a new Star Trek show. I would also pay for just Doctor Who. Perhaps we need a true Sci Fi Channel with Sci Fi content that those of us who love well written sci fi will pay for…
I would rather see a series that picks up where DS9 left off! I see many new stories and directions the show could take that would tell us some of how things develop after the events of DS9 take place. I hate to say it, but taking the story backwards to the Undiscovered Country period does not interest me at all.
