CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Accidentally on Purpose has been cancelled or did CBS make the right choice?

This show is great or was after I watched all episodes in 2 days then I read they cancelled it. Go figure…one of the best shows I have watched in a long time and they said it was’nt good enough to keep. CBS you really should rethink this one!
I completely agree. I just watched in on Netflix. It only took me a day I liked it so much.
One day I was sick and I had to stay in my room all day and all I had to do was watch Netflix so when I was on Netflix I found the show accidentally on purpose and I fell in love with this show. Everything about it was great it was funny and hilarious and sweet I watched all of season one that day. Well once season one ended and Billie had her baby I was so excited for the second season an when I scroll to the bottom of the screen there is only one season. I flipped… Read more »

everyone seems to agree with me that this was one of the best shows in quite awhile. CBS should sell the rights to NBC, ABC, WB, FOX. Bring it back!~ Start season 2. It was such a good show!!!!!
Don’t Cancel it you morons! bring it back! You people are stupid to cancel this show!
Argh!! I’m also very disappointed. I also found it on Netflix and when I saw the few seasons on there feared the worst which this article confirmed. I love funny shows with a great story line and great actors. This show had it all. Why oh why!!!
I’m so pissed off at CBS taking it off I found the show on Netflix and I got into it then find out there will be no more wtf. CBS is killing everything that’s good and keeping stupid **** on. Out of all the shows I watch is two and half men, 2 broke girls Big Bang theory and some more that I’m not getting into but really CBS you suck
I am so disappointed! I found this on Netflix and I totally loved it! So sad to see it was cancelled. It was hilarious and cute!
Accidentally on Purpose is so much better than The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly, How I Met Your Mother (yuck! stupid show), 2 Broke Girls. Bring it back!! So many other people like the show too.
I don’t really watch those shows either. They just don’t draw my attention that much. This show was great. I’m sad to see that it was canceled. They should bring it back.
Accidentally on Purpose was one of the good family shows on TV, which are rare these days. It had a very promising start and it’s a real shame that they cancelled it. Bring it back! Nice family shows are alot better than all the violence that’s potrayed on TV these days, like with Criminal Minds and other shows like that. Those shows give people ideas of how they can commit crimes. They don’t think about the consequeces the victim(s).
I’m very disappointed that Accidently on Purpose was cancelled. It seemed to be a very promising show. Jenna Elfman is a very good actress and her “hubby” Zach was very good too.
BRING IT BACK. I LOVE THIS SHOW!! HORRIBLE MISTAKE TO CANCEL THIS SHOW
