Sweet Magnolias will not return for a sixth season, but the team that brought the series to the small screen is already working on their next series. Netflix has ordered Ladies of the House based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Edmondson.

JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, Heather Headley, Chris Klein, Jamie Lynn Spears, Justin Bruening, Carson Rowland, Logan Allen, Chris Medlin, Anneliese Judge, Brandon Quinn, and Dion Johnstone star in Sweet Magnolias, which was based on the Sherryl Woods novels.

Deadline revealed the following about the show’s cancellation:

“Netflix took a wait-and-see approach with Sweet Magnolias whose fifth season debuted on June 11. It drew 2.8 million views in its opening week, down 30% vs. the premiere week viewership for Season 4, which is a relatively modest decline for a Netflix series this year. (The season rose to 3.5M views in its first full week before dropping from the Top 10 after 3 weeks.)

The streamer also did not commission a Season 6 writers’ room ahead of time the way it typically does for established shows.”

Sheryl J. Anderson will act as showrunner and executive producer for Ladies of the House, and she will be joined by Swisher, who will also executive produce the series.

Netflix revealed the following about the new series:

“Pour yourself a glass: A new family drama is taking root at Netflix. Ladies of the House, a new series from Sweet Magnolias showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson, is officially on its way and will bring Lauren Edmondson’s novel of the same name to the screen.

So what’s being poured at this family winery? When its charismatic owner dies unexpectedly, his wife and two adult daughters must battle through their issues with each other in order to confront challenges with the business, their extended family, and the men in their lives. Good friends and good wine will aid in the journey to hang on to the winery, but what matters most is that they find a way to hang on to each other.

The series reunites Anderson with Sweet Magnolias star JoAnna Garcia Swisher. Anderson will serve as showrunner and executive producer, while Garcia Swisher and Kate Gordon will executive produce under their Rolling Clover banner. Black Label Media, the company behind La La Land and Sicario, will also executive produce.

“I’m thrilled to be embarking on this new adventure with JoAnna and Netflix,” Anderson tells Netflix. “When Jo shared the novel with me, I immediately saw the foundation for a series centered on three women grappling with the complexities of family, friendship, and romance – the kind of stories Jo and I most enjoy telling. Netflix will announce the premiere date for Ladies of the House later.
