WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Black Sails pillaged and plundered for the last time this past weekend. Recently, creators Robert Levine and Jonathan E. Steinberg spoke with Deadline about the Starz series’ finale.
The adventure drama is set roughly 20 years prior to the events depicted in the Treasure Island novel and follows the most feared pirate of the day, Captain Flint (Toby Stephens). The cast also includes Hannah New, Luke Arnold, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Tom Hopper, Toby Schmitz, Clara Paget, Ray Stevenson, Luke Roberts, and Zethu Diomo.
In the interview, Levine revealed their plan was to always end the show close to where Treasure Island begins:
You know, our goal with the ending was to get as close as possible to Treasure Island. It was to try to leave you in a place where you could finish the show and then start at page one of the book, and start reading it, and have it not only make sense in the narrative sense, but also be something of a new story for you. Because now you could fill in a lot between the lines in terms of the characters, and their relationships, and their histories.”
And what about a spin-off series or revival? Steinberg says they thought about continuing the story:
We talked about a bunch of different versions of ways the show could go on. A few of them felt interesting and felt like things that might be fun together. But they didn’t quite feel like the show, and I think the closer we got to the book, the more it felt apparent that the book is the book, and the show is the show. They can talk to each other, and they can inhabit the same universe, but for them to overlap just didn’t quite feel right. And I think the ending, where it landed, everybody felt like they were in the right place. They felt like they got back to some version of the place they started as a different person with a different outlook.”
Look, part of finding the right ending is, in some ways, kind of lurching around in the dark. Part is trying to figure out if it were to continue, what it would be? We love these characters, and I think certainly one aspect of that process was realizing we would love to watch a show about those three in particular. But then feeling like having really brought Flint and Silver to a definitive end, that it would just be a very different show. So, you know, endings are bittersweet not just for the audience, but for the creators as well, and it’s hard to let go, for sure. So, you know, we can always dream on – there’s always comic books to consider.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Black Sails? Did you enjoy the series finale?
Can’t believe they cancelled. It’s one of the more unique shows on tv, with a beautiful set, 4 seasons of impressive character developement, and an endless supply of pirate lore to fuel their plot. The actors were unbelievably devoted to their roles and the history behind it all.
If their characters were getting worn out, they could have retired a few to bring in new ones, not cancel the whole show! All pirate shows have been cancelled and this one should have lived on. Or does Hollywood not like to touch on topics of freedom from tyranny and government? Haha…
Finally a series that ended right.
