What would have happened if The Carmichael Show had continued? Recently, showrunner Danielle Sanchez-Witzel spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about a potential fourth season of the cancelled NBC TV show.
As reported earlier, the network has cancelled the sitcom after three seasons. Loosely inspired by the life of star and co-creator Jerrod Carmichael, the comedy follows a North Carolina family that consists of Jerrod (Carmichael), his old-school dad, Joe (David Alan Grier), devout mom, Cynthia (Loretta Devine), progressive girlfriend, Maxine (Amber Stevens West), and brother Bobby (Lil Rel Howery).
Speaking to THR, Sanchez-Witzel said there was a lot more planned for The Carmichael Show:
I wish the show had gotten more episodes. I wish the show had gotten a chance to air in the fall. I wish it had been behind The Voice. There are a lot of things that I wish could have happened that were always out of our control. I do think airing in the summer, a year between seasons — none of those things ever helped us ever grow an audience. Even with the people who did support us at NBC, there’s a lot that I wish could have happened that never did. But writers, showrunners, creators, we don’t get to decide that kind of stuff, the business end decides those things. But from how hard we worked and what we were trying to do, I do wish that there had been some other opportunities for people to see our show.”
The showrunner revealed that homelessness, Planned Parenthood, and nuclear war were all potential topics for the NBC series:
Maybe nuclear war is something we would have talked about. Who knows what we would have talked about. Planned Parenthood being defunded and the different characters we have would have certainly had something to say. There was an episode about travel and terrorism and fear and where our characters fell with regard to broadening their horizons. We talked about an episode where they were all going to go to Paris but Joe and Cynthia backed out, and Jerrod was mad because he paid for it. There were lots of things to talk about. Certainly, I don’t think we would have run out of interesting topics.

So sad that such a well written, thought provoking has been cancelled. First network show my whole family has enjoyed. Will miss the characters,cast and the laughs. I wish another network or Netflix would pick this show up. Thank you Jerrod for such a great show❤
I really enjoyed this show. I thought it was thought provoking, and quite funny. They covered and approached topics in a controversial way, much like Seinfeld. They said things that we think about, but would not dare say. I’m saddened by the loss to NBC and the cast.

I’m a avid fan of David Allen Grier, Loretta Devine to start with, & I now appreciate the new younger crew. I love the show because its so real in an hilarious way, I never cease to laugh out loud when watching it, yet never miss the msg!, I think the Carmichael’s show is pure genius!! But a large portion of the viewing audience is just into sensseless & tasteless reality tv & who’s sleeping with who which is missing even an inkling of intelligence & dignity. This was an excellent, intelligent, well written show. I’m sad it’s gone, I wish some other network would pick it up and give it the respect it deserved.
