The seventh season of Castle was down by more than 15% but it was still one of the network’s most-watched scripted series. However, shows typically get more expensive to produce as they get older and salaries rise. For awhile, it wasn’t certain if some of the cast would be returning for season eight. If the ratings continue to slide downward, will Castle be cancelled? Will it be renewed for a ninth season? Stay tuned.
On the previous season of Castle, author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) finally tied the knot. If their past is any indication however, it looks unlikely that there will be much wedded bliss in their future. The rest of this season’s cast includes Seamus Dever, Jon Huertas, Molly Quinn, Susan Sullivan, Tamala Jones, and Toks Olagundoye.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
5/12 update: ABC has cancelled Castle after eight seasons. Details here.
5/17 update: You can see the rest of the latest night’s ratings.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
For comparisons: The seventh season of Castle averaged a 1.57 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.47 million total viewers.
Note: Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you still like the Castle TV show? Do you think it should be cancelled or be renewed for a ninth season? How long should it run?
I personally hate season 8 so far. If you like it more power to you. But what bugs me is when people say you’re not a true fan if you complain about the show. Sorry but you can be a diehard fan and still complain about something if you want to.
Show should be cancelled. New storyline is bad.
You have lost a loyal watcher. This story line stinks. It took all this time to get Beckett and Castle together and now you have them separated for a stupid story line. Fire the writers I’m done no interest, maybe Stana should have left the show at the end of last season, then I wouldn’t have been thoroughly disappointed.
I luv Castle,it seems to me if u r a true fan u stay a fan.
Doesn’t mean we have to sit quietly with our mouths shut when we see our beloved couple and show being ripped apart.
I am a litte disappointed about how the story line is going right now.
The show runner tell us that we will pleased. The are trying to fix the ratings.
I agree. I will be staying with Castle as I have for seven seasons.
I could not agree more
All I got to say is that season eight has been god awful horrible and already the worst season ever……unless things improve.
I’m sorry to have to agree with you! Don’t know what the writers are thinking. Wait! They aren’t. The Castle dynamic is all but gone. Things need to change. FAST!
I’m not in the demographic, but a bunch of us get together for Castle Night every Monday. Two points: The story line of Castle mysteriously missing and then not really explained last season is reminiscent of Dallas and who shot J.R. LAME!! and unworthy of such a well-written show. Next, this season started out exciting, but the continuation of Kate and whatever the hell she is doing or tracking is again, LAME!! We, the viewers, have watched this wonderful ensemble of characters grow into something we want to be a part of every week. I really enjoy watching Alexis grow… Read more »
Agree Agree Agree!!!!
Overnight ratings should no longer hold sway like they used to. Do they measure watching one show while recording another for later viewing? Do they record the number of online views an episode gets even two hours after broadcast, let alone later when viewings are free? Do they take into account pre-emption to cover breaking news events? Take a look at the factors affecting Castle’s season 8 premiere: Uncertainty: Season 7 was uneven, under the stewardship of a first-time showrunner who, imo, was in over his head. The writing, long a Castle strength, was also uneven for many reasons. Renewal… Read more »
Educate yourself. The advertisers could care less who DVRs a show if the person is just going to fast forward through commercials. They could care less if people watch a show at all, as long as they watch the commercials that are aired on the show. It’s interesting info for the network to know how many people DVR a show. It helps them to know if people are still watching network TV. But the DVR numbers do not sell. They don’t really matter. Nor do the twitter hits. The claim that Nielsen is just a dinosaur and needs updating is… Read more »
Actually, that’s incorrect. Some shows which have been on the bubble have actually been renewed based on DVR numbers and international syndication, in addition to the ratings.
And yes, Nielsen DOES need updating. They’ve even admitted that themselves.
I so hardly agree, no one could have stayed yet any better.
I could not have said it better myself.
whoever you are–AMEN!!!!!
Thanks
Our most watched show. I definitely want to see stay on for a long time!
Castle is an innovative show and we love it! The chemistry between the cast members is great. Please keep it going!! Good shows are hard to find.
Although 6.84 million is a new low for Castle it’s good enough for ABC. The long sword that hangs over the series is the 1.2 demo . That is deadly, that call will be ABC’s if it doesn’t improve .
It’s best not to compare the season premiere to last’s seasons. It’s better to compare it to the spring finale. It won’t look as bad when you do it that way.
Love my Castle. Have since day one, but I do have my concerns which have been well voiced by others already. As far as this season’s premiere, I tip my hat to Molly Quinn for a dazzling performance & stunning new look. WOW! The storyline kept my interest because it’s Castle, & the intensity of plot, mixed with Beckett’s raw emotion was sufficient. But Castle used to be more than just sufficient. Something is missing from the mix. Still going to watch. ALWAYS:)
CASTLE has stood on its own 7 seasons & most def continues to have our household’s interest. The chemistry of the ensemble cast gives CASTLE its staying power, along with hard work of the people behind the scenes. Will miss Gates & how she made Castle squirm!!!
I was surprised that Stana Katic didn’t make a list of 10 highest paid television women. She’s great and last night’s premiere packed a punch.
The new character played by Toks Olagundoye is a great addition.Last night also seemed to be a coming out party for Molly Quinn. They invested in a new wardrobe and she’s come into her own as an adult and standalone character, not just playing Castle’s daughter.
Huge drop off for the season premier of a well-liked show, probably indicative of how mediocre last season was.
I can’t help but wonder how many people–like myself–didn’t even know there was a new season of “Castle” until I received the “new to your queue” notification from Hulu. After last season’s finale, I thought it was the series finale.
“Castle” remains my favorite show, but I haven’t seen it on a live broadcast in a long time. Whether this is the last season or not, I’m grateful for the enjoyment the show has given me over the years and thrilled to have an unexpected eighth season.
