Doll & Em: HBO Comedy Debuts March 19th

by Trevor Kimball, February 24, 2014

doll and em TV showHBO has announced that new comedy series Doll & Em will premiere on Wednesday, March 19th. They’ve ordered six episodes which will air in pairs over three weeks.

Here are the details:

COMEDY SERIES DOLL & EM, STARRING EMILY MORTIMER AND DOLLY WELLS, DEBUTS MARCH 19, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

DOLL & EM, a six-episode comedy series starring Emily Mortimer (HBO’s “The Newsroom”) and Dolly Wells (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”), will debut WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT), presenting two half-hour episodes back-to-back, followed by two episodes on both of the subsequent Wednesdays, March 26 and April 2.

Written by and starring real-life best friends Mortimer and Wells, DOLL & EM is a semi-improvised comedy exploring what happens when a Hollywood actress hires her childhood friend as a personal assistant while making a film in Los Angeles. A bittersweet, intimate portrait of female friendship, the series follows their relationship through unexpected complications and surprising twists.

March’s episodes:

Episode #1

Debut: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 (10:00-10:25 p.m. ET/PT)

Other HBO playdates: March 21 (2:00 p.m.), 22 (10:00 a.m.) and 24 (7:00 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: March 21 (8:00 p.m.), 23 (2:30 p.m.) and 24 (11:15 p.m.)

After a nasty breakup with her boyfriend in London, Doll (Dolly Wells) joins her best friend, actress Em (Emily Mortimer), in Los Angeles, agreeing to be her personal assistant during the production of a new film.

Written by Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs; directed by Azazel Jacobs.

Episode #2

Debut: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19 (10:25-10:50 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: March 21 (2:25 p.m.), 22 (10:25 a.m.) and 24 (7:25 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: March 21 (8:25 p.m.), 23 (2:55 p.m.) and 24 (11:40 p.m.)

At a pre-production Hollywood Hills party for Em’s new movie, Doll gets stuck babysitting for Susan Sarandon’s son, and later faces a rival when Buddy (Jonathan Cake), a producer and the party’s host, invites her into his hot tub.

Written by Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs; directed by Azazel Jacobs.

Episode #3

Debut: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26 (10:00-10:25 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: March 28 (2:00 p.m.), 29 (10:00 a.m.) and 31 (6:30 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: March 28 (8:00 p.m.) and 30 (3:30 p.m.)

Em is flummoxed by her inability to summon tears during an emotional funeral scene, while Doll, cast as an extra, makes grieving look easy. Between takes, Doll befriends John Cusack and twists her foot on a coffee run.

Written by Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs; directed by Azazel Jacobs.

Episode #4

Debut: WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26 (10:25-10:50 p.m.)

Other HBO playdates: March 28 (2:25 p.m.), 29 (10:25 a.m.) and 31 (6:55 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: March 28 (8:25 p.m.) and 30 (3:50 p.m.)

Em is forced, ironically, into role of personal assistant as a result of Dolly’s foot injury. She reaches the breaking point when Doll, already receiving an inordinate amount of attention from Buddy and the crew, interrupts a critical scene with Chloë Sevigny as Em is being critiqued yet again by Mike (Aaron Himelstein), the director.

Written by Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs; directed by Azazel Jacobs.

Following a critically acclaimed premiere at 2013’s London Film Festival, the Hollywood Reporter noted, “The lead actresses have a can’t-be-faked electric chemistry together.”

Emily Mortimer stars in the HBO drama series “The Newsroom.” Her feature film credits include “Hugo,” “Lovely & Amazing,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “Dear Frankie,” “Young Adam,” “Shutter Island” and “Bright Young Things.”

Dolly Wells’ credits include the feature films “Morvern Callar,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Franklyn,” and the HBO Films presentation “The Gathering Storm.”

DOLL & EM is produced by King Bee Productions, Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola’s production company; executive produced by BAFTA winner Andrew Eaton and Lucy Lumsden, BSKYB’s head of comedy; produced by Alessandro Nivola; associate producers, Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs; co-producers, Stacia Peters and Kevin Fitzmaurice Comer; directed by Azazel Jacobs; written by Emily Mortimer, Dolly Wells and Azazel Jacobs. DOLL & EM is an original production from UK broadcaster BSKYB.

Yes I’d like to see Doll & Em continue for a third season however I can only get season 2 ep.1& 2 on Netflix. Netflix need to pick up there game tho as they seem to leave us hanging without new seasons of many shows. Just watched 5 seasons of Downtown Abbey only to find they won’t be airing the 6 & final season.. If this keeps up I will be cancelling my paid subscription to Netflix. Donna
