Last summer, CBS found ratings success with new series Under the Dome. This summer, they introduced Extant, a sci-fi series starring Halle Berry. Has it been a hit as well? Will the series be renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead?
On Extant, astronaut Molly Woods (Berry) returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission in outer space. Her reunion with her family is thrown into turmoil when it’s learned that she’s pregnant. Others in the cast include Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon, Hiroyuki Sanada, Camryn Manheim, Grace Gummer, and Michael O’Neill.
Debuting on July 9th, the series got off to a decent start and attracted a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.58 million viewers. In week two, the ratings saw a moderate decline which is not unexpected for a new series. Unfortunately, the numbers took a big dip in week three.

The ratings seem to have now leveled off and the show consistently draws a 1.0 rating in the demo with under six million viewers. Those are hardly impressive numbers for an expensive show with a movie star as the lead.
Last year’s Under the Dome was profitable for CBS even before the series aired, thanks to a deal with Amazon and others. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon for Extant but it’s unclear if that will be enough to get this particular show a second season renewal.
Series creator Mickey Fisher says that he has big plans for season two but has assured fans of a satisfying finale if the show is cancelled. He believes the series has a 50/50 chance.

Yes it should be renewed. I watch every weeks show even if I have to watch it online. Used to watch under the dome but quit after 1st episode this year.

Excellent show. The acting is outstanding. Was easy to get emotionally attached to the characters. Please don’t cancel! It’s nice to see intelligence instead of a bunch of self absorbed reality crap.

Great series! Intelligently written, superbly acted, and an edge of the seat series that would be a great loss to this industry if it is not renewed! In my opinion, we have enough police, medical, and reality shows on the air, this is fresh and new, and a totally gripping entertaining new series!
Here in France we are looking forward to see the first season all my friends in America day it is great, please go for season 2! This is the only door freaking with an original topic and not the same police and mcdreamy’s boring plots.
Must make another one. Loved this. Cried over Ethan a few times. Couldn’t wait for the next one after each episode. Please don’t just go on ratings. Go on comments. Internet viewers are among the main demographic and you would miss so many viewers. Please make a new one.
One of the better believeable shows on TV this season. I switched from watching another network in this time slot to watch Extant. I plan to continue its support in season 2 and above. If canceled, I’ll return back to the other network.
The show is fantastic. It is really great to not have all the sex and garbage that seems to be on the other shows. It is a show that deals a lot of daily details that we deal with all time. Honestly, family, love, fear, and mostly joy. Very good writers and the actors are really believable, not like they are reading a script. Keep her going, she will make you money….
Extant is one the best series my son and I have watched. Halle Berry, Pierce Gagnon, and the rest of the cast were amazing. Please keep the show. It was well made, well scripted, and certainly deserves renewal. Every episode felt like we were watching something that should have been released in theaters. Please renew Extant! We LOVED it!
