Heroes: Masi Oka to Return for Heroes Reborn in Fall 2015

by Trevor Kimball, March 28, 2015

m,Heroes Reborn TV showNBC has announced that Masi Oka will reprise his role as Hiro Nakamura as a guest star in the upcoming Heroes Reborn series. The 13 episodes will premiere this fall.

Here’s the press release:

MASI OKA TO RETURN AS HIRO NAKAMURA ON NBC’S “HEROES REBORN”

“Heroes Reborn” to Debut in Fall 2015

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – March 27, 2015 – Masi Oka (NBC’s “Heroes,” “Hawaii Five-0”) will reprise his Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role as Hiro Nakamura for a guest-starring arc of episodes on NBC’s new event series “Heroes Reborn,” which will premiere in Fall 2015.

“I’m excited to return to my ‘Heroes’ roots,” said Oka. “Hiro Nakamura was such an inspirational role to play, and I’m hoping the fans will enjoy seeing him back on TV.”

“We are thrilled to have Masi back in the ‘Heroes’ family,” said creator/executive producer Tim Kring. “The character of Hiro Nakamura was such a huge part of the first series’ success, and a gigantic fan favorite. We felt the fans would really love seeing him back in action again.”

Oka can currently be seen in the role of the eccentric Coroner on the hit series “Hawaii Five-0.” He has also recurred on NBC’s “Scrubs” and Fox’s “Luis” and guest-starred on “Without a Trace,” “Joey,” “Reba,” “Still Standing,” “Will & Grace,” “Yes, Dear” and “The Gilmore Girls.” Oka recently appeared in the feature film “JOBS” and is stepping behind the camera on the feature-film adaption of the worldwide phenomenon Japanese Anime “Deathnote,” which he will produce with VIZ Productions, Dan Lin, and Roy Lee. He starred in the feature-film remake “Get Smart” and its companion DVD release, “Get Smarter.” His other feature film credits include “Along Came Polly,” “Austin Powers in Goldmember,” and “Friends with Benefits.”

With a background in improvisation, Oka has appeared at the Groundlings, ImprovOlympics, Second City and guest starred as various characters on “Punk’d,” “Reno 911” and “The Jamie Kennedy Experiment.” He is working with Yoshimoto to bring the famed Second City to Japan and thereby introducing American improv to that market. Oka also works behind the scenes as an advisor to JETRO and a cultural envoy to the U.S. Embassy, bridging the gap between Japan and Hollywood in the arts and business. After graduating Brown University with degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science and a Theatre Arts minor, Oka pursued an acting career while taking his first job at George Lucas’ Oscar-winning special effects house Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) providing technology for groundbreaking effects for more than 30 films. Oka’s strong background in computer science laid the groundwork for his starting Mobius Digital, a gaming company that has successfully launched several apps with more in development. He sits on the Celebrity Cabinet of the American Red Cross. Oka was born in Tokyo, Japan, and moved to Los Angeles at age six, where he currently resides.

From creator/executive producer Tim Kring, who imagined the original critically-acclaimed 2006 “Heroes” series, comes “Heroes Reborn,” an epic 13-episode event series that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities. The cast includes Jack Coleman (“Heroes”), Zachary Levi (NBC’s “Chuck”), Ryan Guzman (“The Boy Next Door”), Robbie Kay (“Once Upon a Time”), Danika Yarosh (“Shameless”), Judith Shekoni (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2”), Kiki Sukezane (“Death Yankee 3”), Henry Zebrowski (NBC’s “A to Z”) and Gatlin Green (“Criminal Minds”).

Produced by Imperative Entertainment, in association with Universal Television, “Heroes Reborn” will air in fall 2015 on NBC. NBC’s digital platforms, as well as Hulu and video-on-demand, will debut an online prequel to the series prior to the show’s premiere. Joining Kring are executive producers James Middleton and Peter Elkoff.

What do you think? Do you plan on watching the Heroes Reborn series this fall?

YAY!!!! I was so upset when they took Heroes off. Wish all the original cast was coming back, but so glad that Masi Oka is reprising his role as Hiro Nakamura. He was my favorite character. Can’t wait to start watching it again. YAY!!!!

I will have to watch and give it a chance. The first season was truly great but I was thinking how the show would continue after the magic of the first season was over. The choices were continuing the characters but without the magic of discovery (who they were, their past, how they were related, etc.), or start with a new set of characters each year (possibly the only way to recapture the feel of the first season). Writers strike or not, the repetitive nature of the show after season 1 doomed it. Season 4 changed the setting (finally) to… Read more »

Well this is fantastic news! I absolutely loved Heroes and I’m betting that if that ridiculous writers strike hadn’t happened Heroes would still be on TV. In the end Heroes looked more like it was written by incongruous idiots there was no discernible storyline which in turn killed the series! I, for one am really looking forward to the reboot!

I totally agree, the first series had such a straight forward storyline, “save the cheerleader, save the world”, the later series seemed to rip up what passed for a plot every few episodes and start again from scratch, it was painful to watch in the end.

That’s my question, too. And as far as HEROES, I’ll pass. It started out pretty interesting and then went downhill… introducing way too many goofy characters.

No he’s not leaving the show. There’s been actors that have been on more than one show at time during a season and since his role on Hawaii 5-o is small, is character doesn’t take that long to record.
