News recently surfaced that, in light of NBC’s cancellation of My Name Is Earl, TBS was interested in picking up the show for 13 new episodes. The cable channel currently airs the first three seasons and is scheduled to add season four in the Fall.
Unfortunately, all sides weren’t able to come to an agreement so there won’t be a fifth season of the sitcom. The Hollywood Reporter reports that series creator Greg Garcia and producing studio 20th Century Fox TV decided not pursue the deal after looking at the necessary budget cuts. Meanwhile, the LA Times believes that TBS felt they wouldn’t be able to afford the show and cut the discussions short. Either way, the end result’s the same.
Yesterday, actor Ethan Suplee (Randy on Earl) indicated that the deal was still possible. On Twitter, he wrote, “I heard TBS MIGHT stand for TheBestStation.” Earlier today, he changed his tune and wrote, “TBS isn’t TheBestStation for reviving Earl. Good news is I’m now available to play Shia Laboof’s better looking brother in Transformers 3.”
A little while ago, 20th Century Fox TV issued a statement that said, “Greg Garcia’s brilliant My Name Is Earl kept America laughing for the past four seasons and certainly deserved to continue for many more.”
“While we had hoped to find a way to produce additional episodes for TBS, in the final analysis we simply could not make the economics work without seriously undermining the artistic integrity of the series. As none of us, Greg included, want the show to go out on anything but a high note, we regret that we must put to rest any speculation that Earl will continue.”
“We are grateful to everyone at TBS for their enthusiasm for the series and wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to the cast and crew of My Name Is Earl for their incredible work.”
So, the sitcom is apparently over. Unfortunately, the viewers have been left hanging. If you had your choice, how would you like to see the Earl story concluded?

Ok let me get this straight. My name is earl, one of the only shows on NBC worth watchin, is getting cancelled?!? The people running this network are idiots. The reason you are in the s***er right now is because ur getting rid of the better shows. And what about Kings? Thats another good show that is being thrown away. Tis a shame.
Great job. The only american sitcom worth watching since Arrested Development got pulled. Now what? We have to f’king watch all the squeekie clean yuppie ******** that’s coming out the states these days? F’ck no…
What a goddamn surprise. NBC cancels yet another good show. You guys ever wonder why your network is in the *******? The morons running it keep cancelling the good shows. The No Brains Company is what they should be named is just beyond retarded now and I can promise you this I don’t care if you pricks get the hottest show on T.V.(lol like that could happen they cancel everything except Law and Order) I am no longer watching anything NBC has to offer. Good riddance and kiss my ass!!!
Morons! NBC, you have only 3 shows worth watching, now. I cannot believe you gave up Scrubs and Medium, but Earl?!?! Come on. That is a show that appeals to the masses. I could let my child watch it without worying too much. There was a moral behind it. It’s down home funny. I’m tired of shows based out of LA, NJ, Manhattan, NY, and the same kind of big city issues that only appeal to those that live there. I’m tired of the “seinfield” generation of shows that glorify the type of people who only care about themselves and… Read more »
Unlike Mental, this IS a show that I’m beside myself re: it’s cancellation. It just doesn’t make sense to cancel something successful! But I suppose I’ll never understand the ins and outs of major network politics. Usually it’s insanity to me, to pay the $40 for a DVD when it first comes out, but the Earl seasons were the exception. I’d be first in line on Tues. when those things came in, so it’s a real shame. Their slot will probably be taken up by another O.C., The Hills, Gossip Girl, or something equally vapid to appeal to the tween… Read more »
Hey NBC!! Are you guys totally stupid??? You don’t even have the excuse of making way for Leno with this one. My name is Earl was a great feel good comedy that let you laugh and not think about your troubles for just a little while. Your choices in programming really disapoint me. Reality TV and talk shows….no wonder your ratings are the worst on TV.
I think this fan is moving to CBS.
It’s a great shame that Earl is not being continued. Maybe not *everyone* watched it, but what’s the point of TV channels if we are all fed the same stuff?
between this and american gladiators being cancelled…..it leaves me only watching the biggest loser on this sorry excuse for a network
not everyone likes snarky tina fey comedy
to leave parks and recreations on and take off my name is earl is a crime
maybe they should leave the political agenda out of prime time
nbc, im done with you
My jaw hit the floor when I heard that Earl was canceled. Coupled with The Office, it was a great 1-2 punch for NBC. This a complete mistake. Seriously, enough with the reality shows and talk shows and all that. Put and keep some good comedies on your network, such as Earl, and so what if the show is just kind of in the middle of the pack. Not every show can be in the top 10. If there’s a petition to sign to keep it on, I will certainly sign it.
I think its a real shame earl was one of my favorite shows on T going today and deserves an ending especially since its a show leading to something and has a purpose and has a storyline that keeps it going forward.
i still hope by some miracle the show gets picked up at least so they can finish earls list and end the show in a good way.
From across the pond… We love it in England!!! absolutely disappointed with the outcome! Will no one try to revive it? Scrap the Reality T.V. and the Talk Shows; make way for feel good comedy that everyone can relate to. If i had the money i would ship it across.
i think it all crap. nbc don’t know a good show if it hit them in the face. they take all the good shows off and put on this stuped realty stuff. get some new people in the front offices in nbc before you guys go donw the craper
I believe they are making a mistake. If they drop it, I’ll be very pissed.
Deffently on another network. I don’t know if ABC has already pass, but i’ll like to see that on there with scrubs.
I believe that this is one of NBC”s biggest mistake for the season. look at successful shows that had slumps in the ratings, only to make a come back. I believe that Earl had that chance. it had a strong following, and could have returned to its glory days. I personally still enjoyed the story line and was looking forward to more. I know that it wasn’t because of Jay Lenos new show, but they have given up on a lot of good shows for leno, and i hope it works for them. NBC has sucked for a few years… Read more »
