canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Rectify: Ending on SundanceTV; No Season Five

Published: January 9, 2016

rectify

Rectify has been cancelled by SundanceTV. Season four will be the final season, and it will air on the network in Fall 2016.

Rectify was the first original series to air on the network, so this was not an easy decision for SundanceTV to make. Production on the fourth and final season will begin in April.

Find out more about the cancellation by checking out the press release below.

PEABODY AWARD-WINNING “RECTIFY,” SUNDANCE TV’S FIRST ORIGINAL SERIES, TO RETURN FOR ITS FOURTH AND FINAL SEASON IN FALL 2016

PASADENA, CA – January 8, 2016 – SundanceTV today announced from the Television Critics’ Association (TCA) Press Tour that “Rectify,” the network’s Peabody Award-winning drama, will begin production on its fourth and final season in April and premiere in fall 2016.

Created, written and directed by Academy Award(R) winner Ray McKinnon and produced by Emmy Award(R) winners Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”), “Rectify” first premiered on SundanceTV in April 2013. Throughout its first three seasons, “Rectify” has garnered an outpouring of critical acclaim and a steadfast cult audience, along with a 2015 Peabody Award, a Writers Guild Award nomination and five Critics’ Choice TV Award nominations, among many other accolades.

“‘Rectify’ is in many ways an existential story that was allowed to come to life during an existential era in serial storytelling,” said McKinnon. “It was a case of perfect timing with the perfect partners. I have always felt that ‘Rectify’ could end at any time or just as easily continue. Well, not easily. But there is no perfect ‘end’ for this story nor for these characters. They will continue to live on. We just won’t document them any longer. And the timing of this ‘non-end’ end feels exactly right. SundanceTV has been a dream to work with on this journey; I am so grateful to have been allowed the freedom to tell the tale I wanted to tell in the way I felt it should be told with the mad and beautiful collaborators who joined me on the ride… Oh wait, we haven’t shot the final season yet. I’ll get back to you.”

“Rectify” follows the life of Daniel Holden (Aden Young), who returns to his small hometown in Georgia after serving 19 years on death row. Having spent his entire adult life waiting to die, Daniel must now try to find a way to cope with his past and forge a “normal” life with a future before him. Daniel, who is still struggling with adapting to the routine aspects of modern life, affects everyone whom he comes in contact with, including his very fractured family, those working to protect him and those working against him on the side of law and order.

I want more seasons of Rectify. The only truly quality drama I have seen for at least a decade. I can’t believe season 4 is the last one…I am bereft. Please bring it back!

I won’t lie. I will be ever so sad to see this show come to its finale. I have truly enjoyed it all. I am so very tired of more successful shows letting you know how very deep their characters are by those characters telling you how deep they are. There is a subtlety to the writing directing and acting in rectify that can’t be understated. I love the questions it forces us to ask about ourselves! What do we really know? Imagine a convicted murderer were released into your community on a “technicality”. We already know he’s guilty! Everyone… Read more »

endless drivel TV like ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ will continue ad infinitum, but quality dramas like ‘Rectify’ and ‘Bloodlines’ get cancelled far too early. it’s so disappointing!

I cannot believe you knew you were not going to have a season 5 and never had a closing! Everything is left unanswered and if I would have know that I would have never watched it. From now on I will watch the last show to see the stupitd crap we are left with before I like a show worth watching and waste my time and money. Considering getting rid of Netfix all together and save my money. Sundance TV has made their biggest mistake ever with this one and I hope someone else picks it up. I will post… Read more »

It wasn’t a perfect ending, but it did wrap up many things and left me with a lot of hope for Daniel.

If a quality series has to disappear before we are ready for it, then apparently the writers have said all that needs to be said through their incredible scripts. Honestly volumes were spoken and conveyed through the characters’ non-verbals as well. I have to depend on NETFLIX to see it. Why is season 3 not on NETFLIX? I am sure the network doesn’t care, but I m not subscribing to several streaming services just to find season 3 and eventually season 4. Extremely disappointed. NETFLIX now!

I have been a big fan of Rectify, and am disappointed there won’t be a Season 5. However, at least there will be a fourth season this Fall, which hopefully will tie-up some storylines and prepare a satisfactory ending (as much as one can be). Even the creator, Ray McKinnon, stated himself in the above article, “the timing for a non-ending feels right.” With a show/concept such as this, there are probably only so many ways the storylines can go before needing to end. But I was hoping it would continue for more than one more season. This is a… Read more »

Rectify is one of the few shows that has depth. The writers of RECIFY were brilliant, and even more so, the cast interpretation of the characters. This is an example of quality TV. I have to rely on NETFLIX…where is season 3? Bring this back……really missing season 3……destroyed that it is completely over.
Why does all the nonsense “faux reality show scripted” junk go on at all, and RECTIFY gets cancelled?

Finally a series that was intelligent and well written. Not every two seconds
someone was having sex and naked. This is what the tv execs think is
what people want (reality please !!) Just like all the todays pop stars music
and singing all sound alike…Brittany,Jennifer Lopez,Justin Beber and
Justine Timberlake! They (tv execs promote the Kardansian like they are
intellegent, and have class!

People want more well written stories like Rectify…’People really do have
brains!.

The best written dialogue on TV, or any other venue. Thought provoking and empathetic. It will be missed.

I love how such a deeply sensitive and complex male character such a Daniel has been so beautifully explored in this excellent drama. I love everything about the series. Sorry there is even the thought of bringing it to a conclusion.

It is too bad that series like “Rectify” get cancelled while so many bad shows continue to air. It is nice that the show can be concluded with a series finale that ties up all of the story lines.
