canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Red Band Society: FOX, ABC Studios Tried to Save Cancelled Series

by Trevor Kimball, January 14, 2015

Red Band Society TV show canceled, no season 2FOX has announced that the three unaired episodes of Red Band Society will run on two consecutive Saturdays — January 31st and February 7th — but that will be the end of the series. There won’t be a second season.

A dramedy, Red Band Society revolves around the young patients and caretakers of the pediatric ward of the renowned Ocean Park Hospital in Los Angeles. The cast includes Octavia Spencer, Dave Annable, Griffin Gluck, Nolan Sotillo, Charlie Rowe, Astro, Zoe Levin, Ciara Bravo, Mandy Moore, and Rebecca Rittenhouse.

The series debuted in September to unimpressive ratings and the numbers got much worse in subsequent weeks. It was no surprise when FOX chose not to order any additional episodes. Traditionally, that’s a sure sign that a series will be cancelled but word is that FOX and ABC Studios each made efforts to keep it going.

Though Red Band Society’s ratings were too low to keep it on the air as a regular season show, the network wanted to keep it — potentially as a summer series. The catch is that that would have required a lower licensing fee. It’s a high-end series and budgets for summer shows are really tight. In the end, it’s not a big surprise that a deal couldn’t be worked out with the studio for FOX to keep it.

Execs at ABC Studios also really like the series so they tried shopping it to other outlets to keep the show alive. Ultimately there were no takers so the series is now dead.

Red Band Society will end its short run on February 7th with a pair of episodes. Hopefully the finale will give dedicated viewers some sense of closure.

What do you think? Did you like Red Band Society? Are you sorry that the show’s been cancelled? Would you have followed it to another channel?

I would definitely follow the show to another channel. I think that the show should be given another chance. The acting is pretty amazing and for me the show pulled me in during the first episode, and I feel as if this happened to a number of other people as well. All I have to say is that the cliff hangers better be tied up in these last 3 episodes or else there should be another season because it is unfair to the viewers that do really enjoy the show and watch it religiously. Even if FOX does not want… Read more »

this show was an absolute delight. i am 28 years of age and i found it entertaining i would follow it to another channel! if all people have to watch is sex, drugs, violence, or crazy reality shows that will be all they watch because that is what most people are accustom to.
hints why this world is so terrible, atleast give us an option of watching a show without all the negativity.

It is ashamed that the bean-counting bureaucrats at FOX who probably don’t even watch TV would cancel such a critically acclaimed show. Red Band Society has great young actors who portray their characters so well that in the face of devastating circumstances you see their courage, dignity, humor and vulnerability. Octavia Spencer who is an award-winning actress is fantastic in her role; I love watching her. And Dave Annable is great as the dedicated doctor who takes care of these sick kids. He portrays his character as a brilliant, dedicated, compassionate doctor, but you also see his human side and… Read more »

You do understand that the “bean counters” make sure that the actors and studio workers get paid … right? Without enough of the “right” viewers to attract AD REVENUE, there is no money to pay people.

The only way to keep poorly performing shows on the air would be to cut actor salaries. Ask them if they are cool with that.

Yes, I do understand that to a certain extent. I guess it’s just that it seems unfair for the executives to pay so much attention to the ratings when they really don’t tell the whole story. The executives don’t give shows a chance to develop a following, or the show is put in an impossible time-slot, or there is not enough publicity to create an audience. There are a lot of great shows with good actors that really didn’t get a chance to succeed.

I think that everyone who cares about the Red band show, should email Fox. I think that Mindy should be axed not Red Band.

Of course this show got low ratings…it probs doesn’t have enough damn live action, violence, or comedy or whatever else FOX is trying to push on everyone with their other shows.
I LOVE this new show! As a person will mental & health issues this show has been so relatable and comforting in a way. I’m so sad its going to be most likely cancelled. I think it deserves a different channel to support it or just put it on Netflix. Let the show grow!! Jeeze it just started.

How do we vote on this show to stay on the air is the real question. This show was absolutely amazing a real year jerker, because it portrayed the life of children going through illnesses that are not necessarily talked about or seen everyday. You have a kid in a coma, an aneroxic teenage girl, two young men with cancer struggling to survive and deal with real life teenage problems. Showing the world that these children go through hard times YES, but some way somehow they have the galls to make it through and have some good times doing. So… Read more »

In my opinion, as a teenager not many of us know that FOX plays anything but boring shows and news, and when I found this tv show i had just got done watching the news and I immediately fell in love with it and went online and watched all the episodes i had missed. I have heard that fox cancels a lot of shows but as far as I’m concerned it didn’t do a very good job promoting the show, I told lots of people about it and they all started watching it, and are also upset now. Its not… Read more »

I’m old enough to be your grandmother and I loved the show, too. I think it appeals to all ages; that’s what excellent shows do. I’m sure it’s a “follow the money” situation that got the show cancelled. But it’s just unacceptable! The show and cast were perfect. Maybe if everyone who loves this show will call Netflix and see if they can pick it up. Netflix has been great at producing and distributing their own shows. There are several I’m pushing for; let’s include Red Band Society. Everybody call Netflix!

So do I. You are not a teenager. My guess is you’re the mom of a teenager and you think this will help keep the show on the air.

No, I’m not a teenager; I never purported to be one. I’m in my sixties without any children or grandchildren. Britney is the teenager who seems to express herself very well and I happened to agree with her. I didn’t see any reason to challenge her age. I think Red Band Society appeals to all ages. Besides, I don’t think my posting a few comments would save a show the network has cancelled whether I am a teenager, a mother or just an old lady who happens to think that Red Band Society is an excellent show .

Apologies, I didn’t read it properly and thought the original poster wrote it. She’s not a teenager, no teenager writes like that or would say, “As a teenager….” It’s the mother of a teenager who thinks that will somehow help keep the show.

Again, apologies.

I am really disappointed that “Red Band Society” has been cancelled. I always like to check out the new shows each season. But, I think in future I will avoid FOX shows as what is the point of trying. I think they need to change their rating system. I only hope that I will be able to purchase “Red Band Society” on DVD in the near future.

Cancelling Red Band Society gives me one reason not to watch FOX. Who ever makes these decisions has all his taste in his mouth.

FOX does it again. The network has a very bad habit of cancelling excellent programs without giving them a real chance for success. The almighty ratings rule and idiot programmers are in control, jumping to cancel and replace with some cheap reality show. I cannot believe they actually cancelled Red Band Society. This program had a fantastic cast; the actors and actresses were perfect; the stories were so well done. The show made me smile and cry and laugh out loud. The viewpoint narration was different and really worked. I wanted to hug all the kids going through such terrible… Read more »
