Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Renewed for Fourth and Final Season; Possible Movie?

by Trevor Kimball, June 18, 2010

Secret Diary of a Call GirlIt’s official. Secret Diary of a Call Girl will return for a fourth season on Showtime. That will be the end of the TV show but the story could continue in another form.

Secret Diary of a Call Girl follows Hannah Baxter (Billie Piper), an independent and witty London graduate who secretly works as a high-class escort. Using the name of “Belle,” she’s always loved the single life, claiming she doesn’t need relationships because she gets what she needs from her work. Other actors in the series include Iddo Goldberg, Joanna Bobin, Cherie Lunghi, Callum Blue, James D’Arcy, Ashley Madekwe, Nadia Cameron-Blakey, Ace Bhatti, Toyah Willcox, and Stuart Organ.

The series is produced in the UK and debuted there on ITV2 back in 2007. Showtime considered producing an American version of the series but ultimately decided to purchase and air the UK series instead. The third season finished airing in the US in March of this year.

There was some question about whether the series would continue for a fourth season. A couple months ago, Madekwe said, “We haven’t really spoken about a fourth season yet. I think the producers all really love it and it’s like their baby. They definitely believe in it and the cast enjoy doing it so if it worked out we’d probably all be there.”

Piper, who is also an executive producer on the show, recently said that they were already in the midst of filming the show’s fourth season but that would be the last. According to the Daily Star, she’ll receive £2 million for her work. Showtime has now officially renewed the series so viewers on both sides of the pond will get to see it. They’ve also confirmed that season four will be the end.

Piper hasn’t said what the fourth season will hold but Madekwe shared that she thinks plots will “veer even further away from the client and prostitute relationship.”

She said, “There’s only so many times we can watch Billie have weird sex with weird men! In order for the show to continue to be interesting and fresh it would have to delve deeper into her life and away from the business. I think that’s where the real Belle de Jour went eventually.”

As with the previous three, Call Girl’s fourth season will be comprised of just eight episodes. They’ll start airing on ITV2 in January and will likely air on Showtime around the same time.

Though the TV show will be over, Piper said that producers are looking to develop a movie based on the series. The Sex and the City movies have apparently served as an inspiration for the team.

What do you think? Are you sad that the TV show will be ending next year? Would you like to see a big screen version of Secret Diary of a Call Girl?

Yes, please, make a movie! 🙂 I just finished watching the final season and would desperately love something… happier. Just as a nice wrapping up of how they left it. I think the ending suited the series and Belle’s/Hanna’s character, but DAMN I wanted it to be happy. I felt they left a few possible ways they could angle the story of Belle/Hannah and how they twain might eventually meet in a white-flag way in a movie, and how this just might make her develop as a character and might actually make her ready for a change. Though I love… Read more »

Omg I was so depressed watching the ending. If they were going to do that they should have just left it at Season 3. It ended nicely then. Yes! If they make a movie I hope they wrap it up better!

I’ve been missing the show & had been wondering what happened to it. Like a previous poster, I came across this by searching “what happened to Secret Diaries of a Call Girl?” I’m so glad to hear that there will be a fourth season but also sad that it will be the last. I would love to see this turn into a movie & will keep my fingers crossed that it does! As others have already said, the only way to do it is with Billie Piper as Belle. I love the show & I love Billie Piper! Cant wait… Read more »

This is an amazing series, I am very sad to see it go. Only a show of such high calibre could routinely make its audience wait around for 8 episodes for a year and still have an expanding audience every season. If it is ever released as a film, I would be there opening night.

Also, great cast.

Absolutely love this show! Its cheeky, witty and not afraid to go places other shows haven’t. I am so glad that they have decided to go ahead with the final forth season and would be all too pleased if they go ahead and make the movie. Although I agree with Joan^, I will only like the movie if Belle is played by Billie Piper…..it would not be the same without her!

I am so glad I Googled “What happened to “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” or I would never have known why it disappeared! I love Piper, having enjoyed her performance as Rose Tyler on Dr. Who and glad to know she doesn’t have to beg for jobs. I’m not the only one who appreciates her. Also saw her on the Graham Norton Show, where I got to see her as a real person. So I’m grateful for one more season, and absolutely would want a movie, as long as Piper played Belle.
