Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
I love this show. The main character, Charleston, plays such a strong female role without that limiting her character. The storyline keeps me fully engaged and I never know what is going to happen next. Very thrilling. The hour goes by so fast. This show deserves another season.
Nice response, keep spreading the word!
Keep
Keep State of Affairs! Its mystery keeps people coming back–Love the relationship between Nick and Charles (could have done away with the consumation of the relationship, though). The characters you can relate to.
Margo, I think your boy Nick is toast next week. I am sure Charlie will find another love interest.
I have watched this show grow into a great story!!! I was nervous about a sexy woman being top CIA to potus !! But hey look at all the handsome guys in similar roles. Keeps are attention !!! The whole Fatah story is great. It looks like Nick is willing to die to effect change!!!! Can’t wait for next week!!! Please renew for season 2!!!!!
I tried to watch it. Started slow. I don’t have a reason to like the lead character. A promo for the show said “if you like Scandal or the Blacklist you will like State of Affairs”. NO
KEEP THIS SHOW!!! It reminds me of homeland !! LOVE IT !
My thoughts exactly!
Great show on par with The Blacklist. Renew it!!! I don’t stay up that late but watch it on Hulu. Do they count those views in the retings?
Love this show! I nit always able to watch it in its time slot, but always watch later in demand. I would move it to a different night as well and market it better. Great storylines and acting! I would really miss it if it’s cancelled, and it seems like whenever I commit to watching a show and really like it, it gets cancelled. Hope to see it renewed.
Keep spreading the word Amy, that is the only way we can keep this show on the air!
NEW…PLEASE KEEP “STATE OF AFFAIRS” ! Show is one of best on TV. U need to move from timeslot behind ‘Voice” which has younger viewers so when “State” comes on the younger ones tune out the deep truthful stories of terrorism and politics. Very few between 18 & 35 years want realities of Mid East and seriousness of todays fight against terror and Muslim fanatics. They tune out and the mature smarter audience tunes in who can better handle reality of war,CIA importance to keep America safe and the tough and brave people who attempt to just that, working in… Read more »
Very well said!

Everybody we know truly enjoyed that excellent done show !!!
Jey and company 🙂
Love the show. Very real! Watch it weekly and finding out a lot of people don’t even know it’s on. Poor marketing but great show!
I agree, bring it back and try a different night with more marketing.
i must say that the first two episodes of the season I though the show was OK. almost stop watching it. however, as i continued to do so, i got really into the show and now i cannot wait to see it. i don’t have the time to watch on on the day it runs but i have my tv set up to record all the new shows form state of affairs.
please keep the show. it’s really good because it keeps you in suspense and really get you so involve that you want more.
Completely agree–it was a slow starter but turned into one of the best new shows out there. Give it a chance for one more season–it will work.
We all know that sadly people prefer shows about rap , drugs , killing an need I sad untalented people that like to pull reverse discrimination
Perfectly said!
Keep State of Affairs! Excellent story, acting and suspense.
This show is so poorly written. The characters are so unbelievable and the actors need to take acting lessons. This show is a waste of an hour. NBC bring back some shows with quality.
There is still a chance that this show might not be cancelled. Afterall “Gilligan’s Island” ran for 3 years in primetime!
