Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
Keep it! Love the show.
Keep it!
Great show. Keep it. Do some marketing instead of cancelling.
Do not cancel the show, it is one of my favorites!
In my opinion this is one of the best shows on TV! It is riveting and keeps me coming back week after week to a channel and network that I never watch due to the poor choices in programming. There are only 2 reasons I consider tuning into NBC and that’s for State of Affairs and The Blacklist. Please keep this show!!!
This is such a great show and definitely should not be canceled. I agree with the other reviewers: -DVR recordings of shows NEED to be counted (otherwise how will they ever be able to tell how many people actually watch the show?!) -I love that several networks have debuted shows with strong female leads doing high power jobs (The Good Wife is still airing plus the two new shows, Madam Secretary and State of Affairs) -It’s great, and about time, that we see a female president (and of color no less!) -NBC really does give up on great shows too… Read more »
Best show on TV. It is so real! That could be its problem. People in tough times want an escape from reality. Please, give it a chance to find its audience. Just wish we had a POTUS like Woodward!
We do. And she is the only even vaguely believable character in this show. Have any of the people who claim to love this mess even seen Homeland? I know, different strokes and all that but come on……
cancel it and save the bandwidth
The show is very entertaining,K.Haigel is doing a great job as are the rest of the cast and crew.
Please give her and the show a chance and renew it for a new season
I look forward to State of Affairs each week. Amazing storyline and keeps me glued to the television. Please DON’T CANCEL! Give it more time.
I think Katherine is great …love this show
Don’t CANCEL! Phenomenal show!
This is a great show. Perhaps change the time to 9:00 PM.
Dump it. I love Katherine, but this is not the show. I think it’s just drug along with no real grab. Wrap it up and move on.
You need to give this show a chance. I was skeptical at first, but since my wife and I have been watching it, the story line each week has improved and I really like Katherine Heigl in this part. Maybe moving it to another time slot would help ratings for NBC to give it another year to see what happens. This show is one of the improvements for your network just as Chicago Fire and Chicago PD have been. I have been a CBS guy up until now because of their drama shows over the years, but now this show… Read more »
