The Greg Behrendt Show: Syndicated Self-Help Cancelled

by Trevor Kimball, January 25, 2007

Third time’s a charm — though not for Greg Behrendt. In the third syndication cancellation in as many weeks, the Tribune group has cancelled freshman The Greg Behrendt Show.

The “self-help” talk show debuted in syndication on September 12, 2006 and was hosted by stand-up comedian and best-selling author Greg Behrendt. Each episode featured Behrendt attempting to change their lives in some way — from cheating boyfriends to lifestyle makeovers. (You can hear one guest’s experience via The Hollywood Podcast.)

The Sony Pictures Television-produced show was cancelled, like most, due to low viewership. In its four months, the “self-help” talk show attracted an average of only 880,000 households (0.8 rating) in daytime. It was tied with the similarly challenged The Megan Mullally Show that will go off the air at the end of this month.

The Behrendt cancellation may also be due to soft sales at the recent syndication show in Vegas as well as Tribune’s desire to sign up for the new The Steve Wilkos Show from NBC Universal. The Wilkos show will offer a different brand of “help” — more along the lines of the Jerry Springer variety. Wilkos was actually a security guard and sometimes replacement for Springer on The Jerry Springer Show for ten years.

The staff of The Greg Behrendt Show was reportedly told of the decision yesterday and production is expected to continue for the immediate future. A mix of original and rerun episodes will likely air until at least May. TV Series Finale home page

I can’t believe so many people are so sad about this show. I loved Greg’s book and was excited about this show last year, but was really disappointed when I started watching it. The topics were BORING and it seemed like Greg made a big deal about small stuff and that he tried too hard. It became annoying. For example, I remember he did a show about a girl who wanted to conquer her fear of heights. Who cares? What does that have to do with relationships? Also, he had a guy who spent more time with his car rather… Read more »

I LOVE Greg and miss his show! He is funny, sincere and has cool hair. How sad that t.v. executives “dumb down” their shows so they can ensure low class dimwits will continue to watch crud like “Jerry Springer” and “Maury.” BRING GREG BACK!

I didn’t like his views on just about every topic he had. His topics were lame and boring. He was a self proclaimed know it all who didn’t know didley in my opinion. I’m not sad to him get the boot and I knew it was coming. See ya G-man wouldn’t wanna be ya!!!! Oh..and what’s up with that fuzz on his chin. Who told him that was cute? A better stylist might have saved his show.

I have been wondering where the Greg Behrendt Show had been during my lunch hour and am very sad that the show was cancelled. I thought that the show might just be on a break, but unfortunately Springer has permanently taken Greg’s time slot. I really loved the show and it always made me laugh, even when my day at work wasn’t going so well. I think that the way that Greg handled the guests’ issues was great and I loved that he never pretended to be a konow-it-all and called in professionals to further handle sensitive issues. I will… Read more »

I’ve been missing the show since the beginning of the season. I particularly liked the make-unders/people over the top.

A nice change of pace from all the news.

Mistake?……………yes.

I looked forward to watching Gregs show. I thought he was great. A mans man yet he has a sesative side to him too.
I loved his lingo and staight forwardness.
I hate the Springer show. It is tasteless, tacky and totally digusting. The last thing this earth needs is more digusting shows.
I would very much like to see Greg back on. I also like the way he respects his wife and the respect he also shows for family.

I watched Greg EVERY DAY last season! I think he is so awesome. I’d been waiting all summer for new episodes and was wondering what happened to my show, so I get on here and find that it was cancelled! I have no idea how I couldn’t have known this months ago, but I am very sad. Greg and Tyra were daily for me, and as much as I love Tyra, she has gotten a little annoying lately. Greg was the best. I will miss his show. Bring it back!
