On Monday night, ABC aired what was promoted as the season finale of the dramatic series What About Brian. But as fans of the show know, the March 26th episode only marked the 19th episode of the season. If the series was given an order for 22 episodes and there are lots of storylines unresolved, where are the rest?
What About Brian debuted on ABC on April 16, 2006 with the first of five initial episodes. The series follows the story of Brian Davis (7th Heaven alumni Barry Watson) as a “third wheel” in a group of close-knit friends and couples. The series also stars Sarah Lancaster, Rosanna Arquette, Matthew Davis, Rick Gomez, Amanda Detmer, Jason George, Amanda Foreman, Tiffani Thiessen, and Jessica Szohr.
Following the initial season’s ratings, it seemed fairly certain that the series would not return for another. ABC surprised many by renewing the series with an initial order of 13 episodes for a second season for Fall 2007. When the show returned on October 9th, ABC seemed encouraged by its early second season performance. On November 10th, ABC increased the 13 episode order to a full 22.
So, with the March 26th episode only marking the 19th episode, some are wondering if this means that there are three episodes that haven’t been aired? In short, no. Shortly after ABC gave the additional episode order in November, the ratings dropped by about 20%. A network rep has confirmed to us that the episode order was trimmed back, though this was not officially announced. Losing three episodes likely made it difficult for the producers to end the season as they would have liked.
ABC has already announced that 11 of its series have been renewed for next year. What About Brian wasn’t one of them. With the drop in viewership and its shortened season, it’s unlikely that ABC has enough faith in the show to give it another chance.
We’ll probably know Brian’s fate by mid-May when the network announces its full Fall schedule. Until then, Brian viewers can take sollace in knowing that they’ve seen all of the episodes that were produced. Fans of other ABC shows like Big Day haven’t been as lucky. Stay tuned!
Please, don’t forget about this show. It’s great!
ABC is awfull this days, they are betraying TV watchers… They are also playing with us with Men in Trees.
please bring this show back fo a third season, this show is wonderful and has a great cast there is alot of crap on tv, this show is not one of them. Also I am a big fan of the show so I often talk of this show to others and they don’t even know what I am talking about because this show was not properly advertized it sort of fell threw the cracks, I just happened to find this show flipping chanel on TV and I was hooked, so I think that if you advertize this show and bring… Read more »
What About Brian is my favorite television show. Don’t take that away… 🙁 Come back for a third season!
I hope ABC doesn’t cancel What About Brian. My wife and I love this show. I think instead of trying to put on new shows they should tweak this one to try and boost the ratings. It’s a great show. They can move it to another time or bring in Heather Locklear. Whatever it takes …but don’t cancel it!!!
Ugh!! I love the show. What the hell are they thinking?

I have never missed an episode. I always looked forward to Monday and What About Brian. Why does ABC cancel all the quality shows? It is just so frustrating! My favorite show will be sadly missed, please keep it on!
This show was one of the reasons I bought a 46″ LCD HDTV and HD satellite package!
I love this show! I can’t believe this might be it. My husband and I watched it together every Monday. I am in my late 20’s and thought that I had finally found a show that I could relate to. It would be a shame for ABC not to give it one more shot.
I haven’t missed one episode

I too love this ABC show “What about Brian” I looked forward to this every monday evening. Then on Tuesday, discuss the show with friends at work, who also love this show. Great story lines and Great Cast. Pls think twice before dismissing the show.
I was in love with “What About Brian.” My fiance and I would look forward to watching that every Monday night together! I’m sick and tired of getting into a show and then it not returning. There is just too much time put into watching a show and it is honestly disapointing to see it cancelled without any warning. These kinds of things just hurt the networks because now I’m not likely to get hooked on another series again. I would strongly suggest you to take a good look at the pilot and make sure that its going to be… Read more »
