CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Accidentally on Purpose has been cancelled or did CBS make the right choice?

I don’t understand how they canceled a show with so much potential. Jenna Elfman was outstanding in this. Perfect casting! Excellent writing! What a disappointment not to get to enjoy a season two.
This has been one of the funniest shows I have ever watched! I am shocked it has been cancelled. I watched it on Netflix, but if I had known about it being on TV I would have watched it then. Perhaps this is why it did not get the ratings it so much deserves, with American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and shows like that where people are so devoted to them. It takes time for people to notice new shows. Bring on the reruns and give this another chance on TV, I want so much to see a season… Read more »
I’m so upset this show was cancelled! 18 episodes on Netflix is just not enough!! I was soo looking forward to watching them raise the baby!!!

I can’t believed this I’m so upset wth? Why would they not bring it back =/ I don’t even watch CBS but I did for this show I loved it!!!!!! BRING IT BACK!!!!
AARGH now I hate them so much!!! I loved the show!!!!!
I agree w/Ana… I watched this show on Netflix and loved it. If CBS did in fact tape season 2, they should at least sell it as a series so the show’s fans can enjoy watching. HELLO CBS… ARE YOU LISTENING???
I WATCHED THIS ON NETFLIX AND I AM SOOOOOOOOO SAD I JUST FINISHED IT ALL! I HOPE THEY BRING IT BACK! First time i really laughed hard at tv in a while. I love it SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much and really wish they hadnt canceled it! Bring back season 2! How will they raise the baby??? I cried at the end knowing i couldnt watch it ever again! I WANT MORE OF THIS AMAZING SHOW, AND SO DO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY OTHERS!
Besides for the NCIS series there wasn’t much reason to tune into CBS. Finally, another show that is worth watching and it has been taken away. Jenna Elfman is awesome in her role and that Scottish firecracker is a hoot to watch. Even the male cast is hilarious to watch. I haven’t laughed so hard at sitcom in such a long time and was looking forward to see what happens next. Ditch the big bang nerds and bring back the lady with the baby!
Loved this show!! They need to bring back season 2!! So upset.
i loved this show so much
i hate that they cancelled it. seriously.
its so sad, i think if they gave it more time, this was likely to be as big as friends but in a different way!
LOVED this is show…watching it on Netflix it is a sad thing it was cancelled!!
