CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Accidentally on Purpose has been cancelled or did CBS make the right choice?

Bring this show back. I did not get to watch iy while it was on television. I rented it from Blockbuster. I LOVE THIS SHOW. It was too funny. All the characters were a riot.
They have to bring this back.

Bring it back please. This was a great show I haven’t laughed that hard at a show like that in a long time.
i loved this show, and i had no idea that they moved it to wednesday. i think they should bring it back!
Please bring it back! Such a good show. They didn’t advertise it enough when it was first on! Give it a better chance, and it will be able to prove itself.
They need to bring the show back on Monday nights. It is witty and I watched all 18 episodes in 2 days. BRING IT BACK CBS!!!
I watched the entire season on netflix and loved it. It was very funny I think CBS should reconsider making the second season.
Bring the show back, put it on monday nights, it did well. i enjoyed it. nothing upsets the us then for you to cancel a good show. IT SEEMS LIKE ALL THE GOOD SHOWS GET CANCELED.
I watched all 18 episodes on neflix and fell in love with the show. Hate to see it go and would love if they would BRING IT BACK. It was a very funny comedy and i would like to see how billie and zack do as new parents.
I loved this show and hate that it was cancelled. It was so funny but because CBS moved it from a great spot with other great shows to locate it with some other shows it caused the ratings to drop. That should tell them that they made the wrong decision at first and try it back along side it’s shows that are higher in ratings. BRING BACK our favorites! We need more comedy back on tv instead of all these reality shows.
I watched all 18 episodes on netflix and I was hooked right of the first episode. I love how funny all the characters are but how serious they could be. It is a shame that CBS decided not to continue with the show, I would definitely would to see Zack and Billie as parents.
I watched the entire season one on Netflix all in one day because it was sooooo funny. I watched more television today than I have in the last three months combined. There is so much crap on tv. This show makes you belly laugh. Can’t imagine why it was canceled. Very, very whitty writers and excellent actors. Truly, truly a shame.
i completely agree!! i love this show.. too bad i didnt catch it when it was on television; i watched the whole season on netflix in two days!! i feel like my life is not complete until i find out how billie and zach’s play out!! im so heartbroken.
