Following the ratings success of The Bible mini-series on History, NBC ordered a sequel — AD: The Bible Continues. Has this mini-series been the answer to the network’s prayers? Will they want a second season?
Produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, AD: The Bible Continues tells the tale of the later chapters of biblical history (following the Crucifixion of Christ). It focuses on the disciples who had to go forward and spread the teachings of Christ to a world dominated by political unrest. The cast includes Juan Pablo Di Pace, Adam Levy, Richard Coyle, Vincent Regan, Greta Scacchi, Babou Ceesay, Chipo Chung, Emmett J. Scanlan, Jodhi May, Joanne Whalley, Ken Bones, Kevin Doyle, Helen Daniels, and Fraser Ayers.
The series debuted on April 5th to a respectable 2.33 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 9.68 million viewers. Unfortunately, the numbers saw severe drops in weeks two (falling 28%) and three (falling 31%) and the rating have kept coming down nearly every week. AD has hit series lows of a 0.7 rating in the demo and little more than four million viewers.
Though this was billed as a mini-series, the producers have said that their writers have been working on scripting season two. Just in case the network wants a second season, they need the additional lead time to have episodes ready for next Easter.
Still, based on the ratings, there doesn’t seem to be much reason for NBC to order a second season of AD. They could make the show an annual event but the audience numbers really aren’t big enough for a network.
Burnett and Downey could however choose to take the project back to cable where The Bible was a big success for them. That also did very well with DVD sales. In today’s ever-shifting marketplace, they could find enough outlets to keep producing Bible-based series for years to come without being on a network.
What do you think? Would you like to see a second season of AD: The Bible Continues on NBC? Would you watch it elsewhere?
7/3 update: NBC has cancelled the series. They won’t air a second season but…
Loved this show, so sad to see that it is not returning to NBC. Sure would like for it to continue.
I’m so sad it’s not coming back for season 2 my daughter and I watched every single episode, and we were looking forward to season 2 :((
My husband and I love the show! We didn’t miss an episode
I true joy to have witness this gift via NBC.
You really think I won’t watch season 2 because NBC might not pick it up?
The mini series made this macho man cry through the grace and love of my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.

That is one of the most best movies in history that I have ever seen one of the best Bible stories the stars were so amazing and doing their part as the characters of the Bible we all need to see more movies like that that will change our lives God bless
I am saddened that this will not continue, I have recorded them all and every episode was amazing and so well done. Please put it back on, or make videos for us to purchase. There is so much ugly stuff on t.v. please do something.
I never missed one episode they need more of this, i really hope they change there mind and do many more seasons. Please put back on..
Yes, please we need this at this time.GREAT show. I love Bible story shows it is so up lifting
I hope it goes to Netflix; if it isn’t already there. I have felt the newer media showing Bible events has been excellent. Using newer technology to recreate the events in the bible is a great way to influence the younger generations and generations to come. I just found out today that NBC cancelled it. I will be looking for season 2; even if I have to buy the DVD. Star Wars, Star Trek, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics have been popular but they are fictional. We will try our best to recreate the power of the Father, The Son,… Read more »
That was the best of the truths of the Bible and done very well… You probably have other programs that aren’t as good more violence and sex which we don’t need in our world… We need some of goodness of the truths of God….. Please bring it back…..
Please..PLEASE..LEAVE IT ON. ON NBC
I will watch the series wherever it airs. I considered it the best nbc offered.
Bring back the series! It was the most powerful Bible series that was ever televised! The series brought the “The Good News” from GOD’s Holy Word.
