canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Blood & Oil: Cancelled Already? Would You Keep It?

by Trevor Kimball, October 25, 2015

Blood and Oil TV show on ABC: canceled, no season 2Late last week, it was revealed that ABC had cut the first season of their new Blood & Oil TV show, from 13 to 10 episodes. Does this mean that the series has been cancelled or does it still have a shot at being renewed for a second season? How are the ratings?

On Blood & Oil, young couple Billy (Chace Crawford) and Cody LeFever (Rebecca Rittenhouse) move to Williston, North Dakota to seek their fortune. Billy’s drive attracts the attention of oil barron Hap Briggs (Don Johnson) and Hap takes him under his wing, much to the dismay of Hap’s son Wick (Scott Michael Foster). The rest of the cast includes Amber Valletta, Adan Canto, India de Beaufort, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Delroy Lindo.

The series debuted on September 27th and attracted a 1.36 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.36 million viewers. It was a disappointing start for the new drama. Both Once Upon a Time and Quantico (Blood & Oil’s lead-in and lead-out programs) did much better which could mean that some viewers specifically tuned out for the new series.

The ratings saw a reasonable drop in week two but then saw a huge tumble in week three — falling to a 0.86 in the demo (down 31%) with 3.91 million (down 26%). Viewership dropped another 11% in week four.

While some new ABC series have received full season orders (Quantico and Dr. Ken), the network has cut Blood & Oil’s episode order. While the network hasn’t officially cancelled the series, it’s clear they have no intention of making any more episodes unless there’s a surprise upturn in the ratings.

Word is that the cast and crew are currently filming episode eight. Episodes nine and 10 are likely in pre-production.  Hopefully there’s still time for the writers to give the series some semblance of a satisfying conclusion.

What do you think? Do you like the Blood & Oil TV show? Do you think that it should be cancelled? Would you keep it on the air if you ran the network?

The “Big Three” should FINALLY realize that cable is killing them. They better be satisfied with the ratings and try to build on that. They have sports show (football) that will draw big ratings, leave the shows alone. They are pissing their fans off, and most are going to cable where they keep shows going longer.

I think blood and oil should remain on going on to season two as it is a great program and it don’t have all the bad violence and bad language and all the busty like other programs if there are other company like fox USA and other channels or there’s Netflix or Hulu for this program and there wouldn’t be no inference with other programming why not give Don Johnson and his cast more a chance I hope blood and oil stay in the makings as other people wish for this also

ABC Blood and Oil should not be canceled. Beats the heck out of Quantico and the Good Wife. Takes time for a new series and this will be a winner just like the original Dallas was.

I like the show and am disappointed to hear they’re thinking of cutting it. I have to say though that to put a new show on a SUNDAY night is ridiculous. I for one DVR six shows at 9-10 and 10-11pm. Football is on too and it’s like asking to get low ratings when you start showing a new series on a too-loaded night. Why not try it on SATURDAY when NOTHING else is on. Plenty of people watch TV on Saturday. It’s like signing a death warrant for a new show that starts on acSunday. I give up on… Read more »

What? Cancel the show??? This will be a stupid move made by stupid people. This is exactly why I watch very few “new” shows. I invest my time and attention and then they yank if off the air. The big wigs will never understand the common viewer.

I’m giving up on ABC. IN the past 4 years, every time I have liked a new show on this network (except Nashville), it’s been cancelled. I thought Blood & OIl a breath of fresh air instead of stupid ?reality? shows and fairy tails, etc. This show is well acted, not bad on plot for a “soap opera”. I can follow it a lot more easily than “How to get away with murder” which I’ve given up on….it’s work just to make it thru an hour of that one.

Sorry everything isn’t spelled out for you and you have see the end to see what happens. Shows that are easily to follow can get boring and predictable. Guess like knowing who did it during the first episode or so. : p

No, I think the premise is overdone… I.e Dallas, Falcon Crest, Vegas, Dynasty – etc… etc… It won’t last long.

I love Blood & Oil! I really hope they give it a chance. To often networks give the Ax to a great show to soon. I’m really hoping the ratings go up. To anybody that hasn’t watched please reconsider. Binge watch to get caught up. It is worth your time.

I like so far it is different from the past shows that were about oil. In opinion they should gave it a chance to find it’s fan base maybe try moving it to another night before cancelling it right away.

ABC should NOT cancel “Blood & Oil”. It is a great show, very entertaining. I wish networks would give new shows that have substance at least air them for a full year. Sometimes people need time to find a show. And maybe Sunday night is not the time slot for this show. At least try it on another night. Just please reconsider cancelling “Blood & Oil”.
