Eastwick: No Closure for Cancelled ABC Show; Who’s at Fault?

by Trevor Kimball, November 12, 2009

Eastwick canceledThere’s some more bad news for fans of ABC’s Eastwick. Not only has the series been cancelled but the last episode is going to leave several storylines unresolved.

Eastwick follows a trio of ladies (Rebecca Romijn, Lindsay Price, and Jaime Ray Newman) from a New England town who discover that they have supernatural powers, thanks to a handsome newcomer, Darryl Van Horne (Paul Gross). The rest of the show’s cast includes Ashley Benson, Johann Urb, Jon Bernthal, Sara Rue, and Veronica Cartwright.

The series struggled from the very beginning of its run, mustering just a 3.0 rating in the demo and 8.5 million viewers for its premiere. The second week fell to a 2.3 rating and 6.57 million. Things got even worse after that. Last week’s episode hit a series low of a 1.5 and 4.4 million viewers.

Based on these numbers, it comes as little surprise that ABC decided to cancel the struggling drama after 13 episodes. On the bright side, it looks like all of the installments will air. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like fans will be getting any closure for the many ongoing storylines.

In an interview with EW, executive producer Maggie Friedman said that she was furious over the cancellation. She said, “We have such an amazing group of writers and actors — best people I’ve ever worked with. None of us can believe this is really happening.”

Who's responsible for Eastwick's lack of closure?

Of the possibility of closure, Friedman said, “We’re smack in the middle of several insanely juicy stories. And so we do not get a chance to wrap things up in a bow. Which is killing me.”

She concluded, “The magic was getting crazy, the storylines were getting really exciting and sexy and dangerous… I [just] wish we could’ve given the fans — and ourselves — real closure.”

While it’s unfortunate that ABC has cancelled a series that millions of people enjoy, it’s no secret that the show has been on the chopping block for some time.

The network gave full season orders to its most of its freshman shows a month ago and Eastwick was left out. Coupled with the terrible ratings, just about everyone who follows the industry knew that Eastwick was on borrowed time. Why was Friedman so surprised by the cancellation?

TV show supportOther shows who’ve been on shaky ground have found a way to give some closure while leaving some loose threads, just in case the show was renewed. Shouldn’t that have been the case with Eastwick?

What do you think? Who’s to blame for Eastwick’s lack of closure? ABC, the writers, or just plain old black magic?

This was the ONLY show that I watched on ABC and I will miss the show. It makes me
not want to watch any new show’s for fear of them being cancelled after I have tuned-in.
SO LONG…ABC.

I am extremely upset at the fact that ABC once again has cancelled such a great show. When you watch it from the beginging you are hooked I watched them repeatedly when I recorded them I love this show and you have now taken away the one thing I looked forward to coming home to from work on Wednesday Nights. Thank you so much ABC I will now be boycotting your channel and will spread this around to everyone who watched Eastwick and loved it so that hopefully you will lose more viewers until you put Eastwick back on the… Read more »

Now I have absolutely no reason to watch ABC again. Thanks for reminding me why I don’t like ABC and have not watched that station in years. ABC owes the public the chance to see the series rap up all threads of the story. It was a great spin from the original movie it was based from. I am sorry, but Eastwick is much better then NCIS: LA and other new series.

I’m very disappointed in ABC for canceling Eastwick. Finally a show comes along that is worth watching and they pull the plug? The least they can do is allow the show to wrap up so it doesn’t leave us in limbo. I do hope they follow through and show the remaining episodes. It figures that a quality show would end up in the crapper. They’ll probably replace it with some moronic show that the masses like. That’s the problem: the masses tend to like mindless junk shows so the good shows get axed. ABC stinks!!

Cybill Shepherd is also in the cast and one of my favorite characters! (She wasn’t mentioned in the article.) I liked that the show took time to develop the characters and created the mystery that made me watch the next week. It’s been a LONG time since there was a show that I planned around so I could watch it. ABC is either really stupid or they are using this as a PR stunt to raise interest. Hope it’s the latter!

Cancelling this show is a mistake! I agree with Kristin; this is a great show for a wide age range! I myself am 30 and I have friends and family members ranging from 19 all the way up to 58! Keep this show alive and show your viewers that you care what they think! SAVE EASTWICK!!!

This is ridiculous. I am LIVID over the cancellation of this show! There is some absolutely ridiculous shows on right now and have been for a while and the one show that I thought was going to last for a long time is gone! WHAT THE HELL. I can’t even express how miserable I am. Hah… now I’ll never know what really is up with Van Horne.

So glad this has been canceled. This is just another chick show that only appeals to 50% of the population at best. This was just a rehash of Charmed (only with older, less attractive women) with some Desperate Housewives thrown in.

Unfortunately, ABC is not alone in dumping shows that do not appeal to the masses immediately. On the flipside, a formulaic show like NCIS: LA has already been guaranteed at least a 3-yr run. I could literally spend an hour listing the shows that were cancelled way too soon as well as the mediocre shows that went on to run for many years. I do have to admit that if it were not for my wife, I probably would have never even given Eastwick a chance. The two main problems that doomed this show was that it was poorly promoted… Read more »

I can’t believe that ABC hasn’t yet figured out that TV on Wednesday night SUCKS!!!!! EXCEPT for Eastwick! It is the only thing worth watching, and now, I will do nothing but watch shows that I have recorded from previous nights! They don’t let any show get its feet wet, build an audience or get a chance to really get going before they cancel it and simply make people angry and disappointed in them. I wonder if they took into consideration how many people recorded it? THAT would probably increase their “viewship”. It is just crap that you get to… Read more »

UNBELIEVABLE!! Leave it to ABC – everytime there is a good, decent show, you cancel it! What’s up with that? There was Pushing Daisies, gone; LOST, will be gone; and now Eastwick? It’s a fun, funny, odd show and shouldn’t be cancelled. And what’s this about maybe cancelling Flash Forward? I guess ABC just doesn’t want viewers any more! I really hope you leave Cougar Town alone!

I totally 100% agree with Kristin. Of all the shows you have do you really want to cancel such a great show? I really love this show such as many others do. It is the one show that I never miss. And during the week I continue to watch it on your website. Please keep this show on. It is too good of a cast and a show to just throw away.

In this world, where networks cancel shows indiscriminately, they show how little they care about their viewers. If they did care, they would, at the very least, make sure to offer a final episode tying lose ends up on all the shows they cancel. I foresee a day when no one will trust a network enough to become a regular viewer of a any series because of being burned so many times in the past. Here are the ones that are killing my personal loyalty: Kings (sob!)….Southland….Jericho…My Own Worst Enemy….Life on Mars….The Unusuals….And it’s not just the networks, cable companies… Read more »

SERIOUSLY ABC!! COME ON!!! Of all shows you are going to cancel, you have to cancel THIS ONE!!! You have some really dumb shows on TV which is why I stopped watching your network but FINALLY there was a show worth watching EASTWICK and you CANCEL IT!!! What is going on? I just signed a petition for you to keep it on that had over 4000 people wanting you to keep it on and that was only in one day! Think of how many you are going to get over time cause everyone realized their favorite show isn’t on anymore!… Read more »
