canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

FlashForward: TV Show Ratings Drop to a New Low; Doomed to Be Cancelled

by Trevor Kimball, May 7, 2010

FlashForwardAt one time, the ABC drama was billed as the new Lost. Unfortunately, FlashForward hasn’t gotten as warm a reception as the network would have liked. While Lost will soon say goodbye after six seasons, FlashForward will surely end after just 22 episodes.

FlashForward begins as the world’s population blacks out for 137 seconds and they “flash forward” to see visions of their lives six months in the future. The series’ ensemble cast includes Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Jack Davenport, Zachary Knighton, Peyton List, Dominic Monaghan, Brian F. O’Byrne, Courtney B. Vance, Sonya Walger, and Christine Woods.

The series debuted on September 24th on ABC. The premiere attracted a 4.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 12.47 million viewers. The following week, the number dropped to a still very respectable 3.7 and 10.73 million. For week three, the ratings dropped again to a 3.0 and nine million.

Then, over the next several episodes, the all-important demo dropped to a low of a 2.1 rating with just 7.1 million viewers.

To make matters worse, after 10 episodes, ABC took the show off the air for three months. The spin was that this was a positive thing, allowing the network to promote it and essentially relaunch the program. They tried but, as expected, the numbers were even worse when FlashForward returned in March.

Do you think FlashForward will get a second season?

Last night’s episode fell to a new low for the series. It attracted a truly horrible 1.3 rating in the demo and 4.75 million viewers, per the overnights. When a show comes in at fifth place in the demo, behind The CW, you have a disaster on your hands.

While it was once considered that FlashForward was on the bubble for renewal, it’s now clear that there’s no way ABC will bring this show back next season. The ratings are just too low.

Sadly, that very likely means that viewers won’t get all of the answers they’ve been craving. There are only three episodes left so at least we know that ABC will let them all air.

What do you think? Why do you think that FlashForward didn’t catch on? The big hiatus didn’t help but the ratings kept sinking even before that. Not a good enough show?

I think fast forward is an amazing show! Or at least I did when it first came out, but after the first several episodes they had just been dragging out the suspense to the point where it just got irritating to watch, answers every once in a while instead of waiting to tell them all at the end would have been great.

I was gutted when this show finished From the first episode, I was hooked This does seem to happen to a lot of decent series in the US, they never get to finish the whole story, but you continually get reruns of Star Trek, and I saw that when I was a kid, my kids saw it, no the grand kids can watch it, but they dont, they say thats silly and boring (I think my kids only tolerated ANY star trek just to humour me) There are just so many old boring reruns, but you get a great new… Read more »

I really liked Happy Town, I can’t believe you canceled it before revealing the Magic Man or what the hammer was about. It’s typical ABC. There is so much more that was supose to happen, why don’t ABC put a website up to explain how it was supose to end and expose the Magic Man.

Getting the poops with shows being axed all the time. Just when you start to get answers to the twists and turns they tug the show off the air never to return. Its like having sex without the ******.

OK anything that requires the use of thought is being canceled, leaving us with all shows that are about doctors having sex in supply closets, CSI working in dark rooms using flashlights, stupid people in reality shows (thses shows are scripted & staged) eating bugs & playing Jungle Jim & Tarzen like pre-schoolers are left to be shown forever is the only choice I have then TV has expired for me. Let’s see. Not having to buy a new TV, gitting cable installed it will save me how much money not to even count in my time spent trying to… Read more »

Gutted. I love this show. I can’t believe that they are cancelling it without concluding the story line. The massive gap meant the show lost momentum but there is plenty more fun to be had. ABC aren’t interested in our opinion though because we watch in the UK .

Ohh MAN! This is a very disappointing turn of events, I truly loved this show…still do! Im getting ready to watch the very final episode and cannot help but to be overwhelmed by a melancholy so big as my dislike for the fact other mediocre shows will get renewed for new seasons and Flashforward wont…

Come on people there must be something we can do!!!!

I can’t believe it. I’m dumbfounded. I don’t watch much TV drama but this is really good writing. Every single episode is unpredictable and has its intrigue. I don’t know how they measure the viewership. I know every Thursday I don’t watch it because I take the kids swimming. Then I’ll watch it on hulu.com. I probably killed it by not watching it at the live time slots.

My husband and I are SO SAD to find out that this show is not returning! We happened to catch a re-cap episode prior to the the season re-starting in March. We were able to DVR the new episodes & ordered the fall episodes on Blockbuster. We FINALLY caught up to ‘real life’ just a couple of weeks ago and were really excited about this show. I agree with others that if the show was in another time spot it would likely be doing much better. It really is a shame. My husband and I rarely agree on a show… Read more »

I am soooo pissed off!! I LOVE this show! I never missed an episode and actually told so many people that its just as good as Lost and I am a Lost fan! I love the characters and the story line. When I heard about this I was almost in tears! This is so stupid!

I can’t believe they are keeping “V” in place of FlashForward! I love the show! I believe that the time slot that it is in may well be too much competition with the other programs. I also think that the writers can make it more interesting other than the “Heroes”-like threads of characters and making it too boring. We need to move forward a little faster than repeating the same events over and over. Well, it might be too late! Too Bad!

I really, really liked FlashForward. What a ridiculous thing to stop airing it after 10 episodes. Even I, who am a big fan, nearly forgot about it, & when I saw it was back on the air, I forgot to watch it for several weeks… which is ABC’s fault. My husband and I love this show (we’re in the good demographic, too!) and it’s just so sad that the networks are canceling all the good shows: ABC is cancelling FlashForward and keeping V? That doesn’t make any sense to me. And NBC just canceled Mercy. At least Fox renewed Fringe… Read more »

It needs to be switched to the Lost timeslot after it’s series finale.
The show is very good but let’s be honest nothing can compete with
Survivor and anything that has to do with vampires right now on screen
