ABC recently unveiled something a bit different — a fairy-tale style musical comedy called Galavant. How’s it been doing in the ratings? Is the series a big success or is it hitting sour notes? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
On Galavant, a dashing hero (Joshua Sasse) once lost the love of his life (Mallory Jansen) to an evil king (Timothy Omundson). It’s now time for him to exact his revenge and restore his “happily ever after” — while singing. The rest of the cast includes Vinnie Jones, Karen David, Luke Youngblood, Ben Presley, Daniel Evans, Stanley Townsend, and Genevieve Allenbury.
The network decided to air the Galavant’s eight half-hour episodes over the course of four weeks, to help fill the gap left by Once Upon a Time while that fairy tale show is on hiatus.
The first pair of episodes of Galavant debuted on January 4th and drew a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.42 million viewers. It was an okay debut in terms of the ratings. It wasn’t a hit but the numbers were on par with Once’s more recent ratings — and they were certainly far better than anything else ABC was airing that night.
In week two, the ratings took a big tumble, falling to a 1.3 in the demo and 4.11 million viewers — likely in part due to the fact that NBC was airing the Golden Globes. The numbers for tonight’s episodes will probably be as bad or worse since they’re airing opposite the AFC Championship game on CBS.
Galavant’s ratings certainly haven’t been anything to crow about but ABC entertainment chief Paul Lee reportedly really likes the program. It’s a compatible time-slot filler for Once, the show was featured at the TCA winter press tour, and Lee noted that, “If Galavant does well over time, you can imagine how much fun the company can have with that.”
Still, while ABC could order a second season of Galavant (series creator Dan Fogelman has teased that the first season ends with cliffhangers), it doesn’t seem very likely based on the ratings.
But, what do you think? Would you like to see Galavant return for a second season or do you think this musical comedy should be cancelled instead?
I like Galavant, it’s funny and it gives you a brake from all the cop shows.
It should come back for another season!
Soooo sick of all the cop shows, doctor shows, ‘reality’ shows, dysfunctional family ‘comedies’….Galavant is a breath of fresh air.
Brilliant, creative, and very innovative. I would be happy with it being a recurring mini-series of sorts.
Yes, short seasons would be great, but for crying out loud, give it a chance and don’t put it up against football championships and awards shows. There’s a reason that the ‘big’ shows get pulled from the air during this season and putting a newbie up against the seasonal competition is totally unfair and it’s unrealistic to expect new shows to pull in huge numbers no matter how good they are. The numbers don’t always tell the story. I’d be curious to know how many people are recording the show to watch later. Also, the marketing for this show wasn’t… Read more »
Better than “into the Woods” Love the humor!!! Great fill in for Once Unpn a Time!!! Keep It.
An absolute delight to watch! I got into it a little bit late in the game, binge watched the first 6 episodes, and now I can’t wait to see what happens with the finale. Hopefully it’s not the end!
keep it!!! It is a hilarious t.v. show, and very refreshing compared to other shows out there. It’s like having Monty Python in television, and even better we get to have some pretty awesome actors and musicians partake in episodes; John Stamos, Ricky Gervais, etc. It would be fun to see even more actors guest star in the show, almost like a saturday night live.
This is the freshest thing on tv. I describe it as Live Action Disney Princess movie for grown-ups, meets Monty Python’s Holy Grail, meets Broadway. Wonderful, talented cast, great music, funny, entertaining…My daughter and I have DVR’d the episodes and have watched over and over, singing along and catching new jokes we’ve missed previously. Please, please, please keep this one!
I totally agree with this comment!
Great show – clever, funny, entertaining and different – the cast is excellent, as are the guest stars. For once, reward a program that doesn’t fit the standard sitcom model.
Sophisticated. Clever. Delightful. Fun. We love it. That’s likely the kiss of death on commercial television. We hope it stays.
It’s the most creative show on television and it’s hilarious. Let it grow and prosper.
Please keep it.
I will not accept this being canceled. I saw Into the Woods and didn’t care about the music. This aired and the music is the BEST. I tell everyone to watch it. Friends, Family, Coworkers, random people at the supermarket….
Keep this show, I wasn’t sure about it at first. But when I started watching it, it was hilarious and a lot of fun. The cast is great 🙂
Keep it! I love this show!
Makes me laugh, truly laugh! A keeper! Please more seasons.
Keep it! It is so much fun to watch. My son and I spend the week singing the songs. It seems everyone we’ve asked has never heard of the show, then we “force” them to watch it with us, and they fall in love with it too.
