Season average: 1.2 demo and 7.58 million.

Episode 02-01: Wednesday, 9/21/11
The new timeslot has not been kind to Bates and company. The season debut attracted a poor 1.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 7.53 million viewers. That’s a decline of 45% in the demo compared to the series premiere last January and a loss of 14% when compared to the last episode of season one. Fans should be very afraid for the future of this series.

Reference point: The 2010-11 season averaged a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 9.39 million viewers.

Note: These ratings are collected by the Nielsen company and are the final national numbers. These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings and are reported on by most other outlets. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.

One of the more intelligent shows on a major networ, it is able to show a balanced compassionate view of two sides of an issue. The october 12th show was outstanding.
americans meet need more thoughtfulness in the mainstream entertainment media.

I can understand them revamping pretty much the whole show, because last season’s show was doing so poorly in the ratings. However, outside of the addition of Mark Valley, the changes are not an improvement. For example, you can’t replace Brittany Snow with some no name good looking woman with less presence and expect to get more viewers.

This is what NBC gets for 1. putting this show up against Modern Family AND Criminal Minds 2. poor advertising for the season (putting all their eggs in the failed Playboy Club) and 3. changing the format of the show COMPLETELY. I still really enjoy it, but the changes have turned many off and tuned many out. But like we all know, if the demo isn’t there, its going to get cut. It’s in last place on the worst network. Get ready fora series finale soon (if they even get the time to make one).

They’ve ruined the show. It was unique, the characters and situations excellent. Now it’s too much like Boston Legal.

This was a great show last season. Tha fact that they have thrown out the uniqueness of the show for the bland procedural, points to the creators hoping to get it cancelled.

I LOVE this show! The timeslot is a problem, but the “remodel” is still jarring many viewers.. including myself. I was a big Boston Legal fan but think they went too far in turning this into “Cincinnati Legal”. Heck, we even have Mark Valley from BL! Kathy Bates is amazing. One thing I feel is missing is some of her humor. I used to bust out laughing at least once each episode last season by something brash Harry would spit out. This season…. they seem to have dialed that down and it made the show. PLEASE add back some of… Read more »

I like the show but find the commercials are too frequent and the tempo of the show is lost. Either lump the commercials or do something to show more than 3 minutes of action at a time.

You make an excellent point. I also found the too long return sequences of Cincinnati tiring. They feel 10-15 seconds long and eat up valuable story time. We don’t have to see the Cincinnati’s skyline 4-5 times per show. Speed it up!

Their competition is tough! Not sure why the networks don’t take it all into consideration — I mean people are using their DVRs more than ever. The Nielsen family is a thing of the past and should be eliminated! Love this show!

M J » No, it attracted 7.63 million. Regardless, keep in mind those aren’t really the important numbers. It’s the demo that you want to watch.
