Sometimes the truth hurts — especially when it comes to television ratings. After three seasons, FOX has cancelled Lie to Me.
Starring Tim Roth, Lie to Me revolves around Cal Lightman and members of The Lightman Group. They’re a team of specialists who help law enforcement agencies uncover the truth by using applied psychology. Others in the cast include Kelli Williams, Brendan Hines, Monica Raymund, Hayley McFarland, and Mekhi Phifer.
Last season, Lie to Me averaged a 2.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 8.03 million total viewers. That was down from season one and the series found itself on the bubble for renewal. FOX ended up giving the TV series another chance and renewed it for 13 episodes.
Unfortunately, season three didn’t perform nearly as well as season two. It premiered last October to a 2.1 rating in the demo and 5.86 million. Viewership eroded in subsequent weeks and FOX declined to give the show a full season order. Lie to Me then hit a new series low in January, registering a meager 1.5 rating and 5.43 million viewers.

In its final weeks on the air, viewers seemed to rally behind it and Lie to Me had its best ratings of the season — a 2.5 in the demo and 7.67 million.
Though the ratings had come way down, FOX execs claimed that they still valued the TV series and saw it as a solid utility player. Showrunner Alex Cary said, “Fox has been very clear with us — they know what the show is, they know what it can do. [The ratings bump] shows that people will come watch the show.”
Now, after three seasons on the air, the series is over. FOX has officially cancelled Lie to Me after 48 episodes. All of the installments have aired. Though there are too few episodes for a traditional syndication package, the first two seasons have already been released on DVD.
What do you think? Should Lie to Me have been renewed for season four?

I’m crying right now. Seriously. WTF.
Listen I live in Quebec alright .. I watch the show in english but still, it plays on the air in french. Now why would they take the time to translate a show if it isn’t good !! Obviously, Fox has a hard time making the difference between an intriguing show (that we love to watch) and boring reality shows. Can’t beleive they took Lie to me off the air, I loved their new way to solve crimes and stuff. And how can they leave us with Cal saying he loves Gillian and nothing more !!!
FOX….FIX THIS MISTAKE!
Fringe is still on the air but Lie to Me gets cancelled? Who the hell cares what Pacey is doing…BRING BACK LIE TO ME!
I’m irate about this! This was my favorite show and I’d watch it any day of CSI or Greys Anatomy or any of those types of shows. Now I never want to watch TV ever again, this is a huge surprise and let down!!!!
I don’t know about ya’ll but 5 million plus people/viewers is alot of folks to me… I think the downfall of this show is because FOX never backed this show up, always throwing it around its on and off and on again… noone could keep up with it… and people probably didn’t want to invest in the show knowing it was getting canned … FOX if it wasn’t for Bones you wouldn’t even have me as a viewer period… LIE TO ME was awesome… My top favs are Castle, Lie to Me and Bones… what a shame. Why do you… Read more »
I’m disappointed – but not too surprised.
The show touched too many hot-button political issues and current politicians.
No politician wants a public demonstration of how to detect their lies.
For that matter, neither do unfaithful partners who may be watching the show ….
You might remember how FOX axed X-Files and Lone Gunmen after 9-11.
The Truth is Out There …… but they’d rather you didn’t notice.
I’m livid, why do they always cancel shows when there just hitting there stride. I loved every character and they had great chemistry. It was entertaining, thought provoking, exciting and a little romantic. What more could you want?? Obviously for Fox that just isn’t enough $$$$$
Stop it Fox, like in previous comments it’s not just America that watches these shows.
What a shame!! I thought it was one of the best shows on TV. I guess when you implicate politicians the show will get the axe!! The only shows now are “Reality” HA HA! If you ask me Lie to Me was REALITY!!!
It’s a different law enforcement show not just about chasing, shootings, and catching the bad guy. It displays other way getting the criminals
Very sad. sigh…. Tim Roth better be in something soon.
I’m so sad to hear this show will not be back on. My whole family love “Lie to me”. We enjoy learning how a person could show different reaction and we love the actors most of all. Please think about this again an try one more season before calling it quits. (:((
Damn this! The best shows are ALWAYS cancelled!!!!!!!!!!!! There are so many four letter words for this decision but I digress……………and will just say, this sucks. FABULOUS SHOW, FABULOUS ACTORS AND ACTRESSES, AND I’M SAD………..CAL, YOU ROCK!!!!!
LIE TO ME, RIP!
CRAP!
Lie To Me was an excellent show. A smart show. A thinking show. There’s no way it should have been cancelled. I got my 16 year old daughter into the show, the very demographic the FOX network was seeking. Help us all if soon we’re just left with “reality” shows – cheap and moronic, and shows like Dancing with the Stars. Who gives a rat’s a@@?! Certain shows deserve to be cancelled. Lie to Me should not have been amongst them. Can’t help but wonder if political-pressure played a part in the decision? Perhaps Clinton, Chaney, Bush and the like… Read more »
WHYYYYYYYY??? It’s a pity that they are doing this! I’m very dissappointed to read that I was waiting for nothing. I’m attracted to only those kinds of shows, so, if there will not be more of those shows, I don’t think tv has my attention anymore.. Lie to Me… GIVE IT BACK TO ME!
I think, the machine they use to check ratings, is DEFECTED… So throw it away, and ask ppl what they like to watch (AROUND THE WHOLE WORLD, not only America )
I’m from Brazil.
Lie to me is my favorite TV Show. Best show ever. I have no words to express my disappointment. FOX really made the worst decision on its history… I and wonder how this show got so low ratings…. unbeliveble.
There’s only one video which express my fellings about it!
I am hugely disappointed that Lie to Me is being cancelled, like many others have commented, it is an original idea – very well acted (Tim Roth is brilliant) – the writing is fabulous. And so many Networks cancel the good shows leaving us with inane Reality shows or shows that mimic other shows, spin offs so on. I’m hoping if enough fans raise a little hell Fox with rethink this VERY BAD DECISION!
