canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

Being Mary Jane: Ending, No Season Five; BET Drama to End with Two-Hour Series Finale

by Cindy McLennan, October 11, 2017

Being Mary Jane TV show on BET: canceled, no season 5 (cancel renew season 6)

(BET)

Well it seems we finally have the answer to that age-old question: to be, or not to be? While people can argue over whether it has been “cancelled,” the Being Mary Jane TV show is ending after four seasons on BET. Deadline reports the Network has ordered a two-hour movie, which will serve as the Being Mary Jane TV series finale, when it airs in 2018.

Airing on the BET cable channel, Being Mary Jane revolves around the life of news anchor, Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union). Margaret Avery, Aaron D. Spears, Richard Brooks, BJ Britt Jr., Raven Goodwin, Richard Roundtree, Valarie Pettiford, Chike Okonkwo, and Michael Ealy also star. The cancellation or ending does not come as a huge shock. Originally, BET wanted to shoot seasons four and five back-to-back. Gabrielle Union fought that though, on the grounds of break stipulations in her contract. Although eventually, the lawsuit was settled, there was no further mention of a Being Mary Jane season five renewal. What’s more, the ratings were way down during what is now this TV show’s fourth and finale season.

Being Mary Jane: A Look at the Ratings

The fourth season of Being Mary Jane averaged a 0.36 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 860,000 viewers. Compared to last year, it was down by 51% and 47%, respectively. Learn how Being Mary Jane stacks up against other BET TV shows.

BET on the End of Being Mary Jane

Here’s more, via Deadline:

“Being Mary Jane has been a landmark series not only for BET, but for African American women around the world who saw themselves in Mary Jane, her family, friends and coworkers. From the captivating storytelling, to the richly complex characters, to the powerful issues tackled on the series, we remain immensely proud,” said Connie Orlando, EVP and Head of Programming, BET Networks. “We are grateful to the cast and creators of Being Mary Jane, who have worked tirelessly to bring this world to vivid life over the past 4 seasons. We also thank the many loyal viewers whose hearts and minds were captured every week, and kept Mary Jane trending worldwide. We look forward to closing out Mary Jane’s journey with a series finale that is sure to blow fans away!”

What do you think? Are you a fan of the Being Mary Jane TV show? Is this TV series ending at the right time? Should BET have cancelled or renewed for season five? Let us know, below.

Hate to see the show end my husband and I absolutely love the show not to mention the amazing actors and actresses Gabriel Union knocked the role out of the park and such great life lessons in the series as well I really hope they decide to do more seasons if not I will be waiting for the finale One ☝️ thing I can say though is that I hope they do a lot of promos for the ending would hate to miss it just because we didn’t know it was airing Personally I think these Tv networks need to… Read more »

I am writing from London in the UK, and felt that BMJ was a brilliant series, innovative and important in shifting the narrative on Black women and the black communitynd a in general providing a more authentic imagery and narrative. It is sad to see it go, we need a variety of programmes just like what are available in the white community. This series sould have carried on with mroe investmetn and commitment on a long term basis.

I always looked forward to the new season of BMJ. I am sad it is ending. Maybe some one else will pick it up. You never know though, sometimes the actors are tired of doing it… Either way I enjoyed the show and I hate to see it go. I loved the cast too. I’m interested in how two hours will be enough.

Definitely should have renewed and put more advertisement to let us know when it would be airing. They are correct there are so many that viewed Mary Jane with similarities to themselves. It should have continued to give them something to show her manipulating husband child and career even though she had many heartbreaks and broke many hearts, and also she made many mistakes bounced back eventually finding the perfect mate going on as an example of how they can both work in business and succeed It is BET’s obligation to show our young women the Great possibility even after… Read more »

I am hoping that in the two-season finale there would be a reunion between the parents Richard Roundtree and Margaret Avery as well as Mary Jane Paul (Gabrielle Union) and Lee. Though things heated up with her and Justin I think that Lee and her were a better match. I also hope that BJ would get a girlfriend and Patrick &Niecy would have a happy ending. But most of all that Mark (Aaron D. Spears) would guest star. I thought that he was real. Who knows maybe Kara (Lisa Vidal) would get married to her beau (Nicholas Gonzalez)??? It was… Read more »

I bailed on BMJ because it got too preachy, season 2 into 3. It seemed to become a platform for creator’s thoughts–her way to blog. Characters were giving monologues on current events rather than having real dialogue. I did not bother with season 4.

Well actually meme I thought it was a train wreck from that notorious player Omari Hardwick to Stephen Bishop. Her problem was that she had a great career why complicate things by falling in love??? She had a cuddy buddy so if she got pregnant by him then…..

It would have been amazing watching her at this new phase of her life. Finally happy, maybe a little less angry but being happy Marry Jane.

Being Mary Jane was a show stopper show. I learned things about myself watching the episodes. Richard Roundtree is the man and when Jim Brown appeared that way mindblowing. I’m sorry that yhis show had to end. EXCEPTIONAL acting!

I love watching Being Mary Jane. Sad it’s ending. I love, love Gabriel Union & the rest of the cast. Will miss them all! If they decided to keep it on though, that would be really wonderful.

I think BMJ ending at season 4 is probably the right decision, it has pretty much told the story of a chapter of MJ’s life. Now she’s found a mutual true love, and he is fine, sensitive and rich, something she had been searching for. Now all she needs is the baby/child. I hope the finale also closes out her family and her best friend ‘s issues…

I somehow agree with you but another part of me feels like you are wrong because at the end of season four didn’t she get the artificial insemination??? So how would the story pickup??? Lee was also those things but he wasn’t rich. The best friend (Kara) needs to accept that she is with Orlando for the long haul and deal with it. Niecy & Patrick need to find love so does BJ. As I’ve said before I hope the parents would reuinte
