Tonight, CBS aired the final episode of Medium. After seven seasons and 130 episodes, it was time to say goodbye to Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette), her husband Joe (Jake Weber), their children and friends. The series finale of Medium is called “Me Without You.”
As the episode begins, we see Allison having an evening phone conversation with Joe who’s at the start of a flight home from Hawaii. Later, Allison is awoken by another call from Joe. His flight is arriving early and then it hits turbulence, and crashes into the ocean. The episode flashes forward seven years and we learn that Joe indeed died. Allison is now a lawyer involved in a big drug case. Her boss, the district attorney, is killed by the leader of a drug cartel who’s on trial. Manuel Devalos (Miguel Sandoval) is the mayor and Lee Scanlon (David Cubitt) is the chief of detectives.
Allison begins to dream about Joe and realizes that he’s actually been alive in Mexico with amnesia. The drug lord has been using him to transport narcotics across the border. She ultimately decides to throw the case so that she can reunite with her husband. She and daughter Marie drive to Mexico and she is reunited with him, finally.
Unfortunately, it’s a dream. She awakes back in the present and Joe is there, as a ghost. He did die in the crash and he tried to send a message to Allison about how good her life will still be, even without him. Unfortunately, her mind couldn’t accept it and concocted a way for him to still be alive. Joe tells her how much he loves her and that the loss will hurt for a long time but it will get better. Though she pleads for him to stay, he needs to go.
The scene flashes forward to 41 years later. We see a very old Allison, surrounded by photos of her children and grandchildren. She dies peacefully. Allison appears as her younger self and looks at her now dead body. Joe appears to her, just as he had been. He waited, of course. She asks, “Do I get a kiss?” He replies, “From now, until the end of time.” The two embrace and kiss. They are together, forever more.
The episode ends with brief scenes from the show’s seven year history and each castmember silently saying goodbye to the camera and faithful viewers.
What do you think? Was this a satisfying conclusion to Medium? What did you like or dislike about it?

I have loved this show for all seven seasons. I think this was a creative idea for the last show of the series, however I wish they didn’t feel the need to kill off Joe! Especially as the “real” Joe is still very much alive and kicking.
This series has been a pleasure to watch and I am sad to see it go. I’ve fallen in love with all the characters.
Bad dream. Lame finale. Why in the world would it be satisfying for Joe to die? Bad idea.
what i didnt like about it … everything. I dont watch tv much because most of it is crap. I loved this show from the start. It was really hard to get into because it was so much different and felt rushed. I liked the ending where they all had the chance to say goodbye.
i wish the cast and crew good luck… and much love…..
I am a fan! Like all these other fans, I loved the show, so of course I was disappointed when I heard it would end this season. But you had all season to lead up to this one last episode and instead you just tossed this together like you were in a hurry to get outta town! Very lame and lazy way to go, writers! I loved the end, but the rest of the episode was fodder! 🙁
It was show with family values. Great show very disappointed
this was so stupid and after seeing that crazy dame in real life on beverly hills housewifes it does not supprise me one bit she looked like a fool and acted full on crazy i quit watching it after that and just stopped because there was nothing on but all i could think about was what a twit she is in real life im sure that she will be fine because she is so in love with herselfe glad its off the air but to bad the actors are out of work im sure that im not the only one… Read more »
I will miss the show, but I thought they ended the show great. I was happy to see the all the cast say thier goodbyes. all canceled shows should do this.
I didn’t know it was the last show and was upset to see that it was. I have been a fan since the first show and will miss the show. I enjoyed the each and every episode (well, except this one), would have preferred to have the ‘happily ever after’ ending as opposed to Joe and Allisons death. Please don’t put another reality show on in it’s place, try and put something equally interesting on to fill the void. My friend and I always talked about what a perfect husband Joe was (and what a hunk!).. My best wishes for… Read more »
We had not heard about tonight being the last show. We loved it and will greatly miss it.
We are still sitting here in shock. We had recorded it and just watched it.
Thanks for a great 7 years! Joe, finally you will get some sleep! LOL!
Sad to see the show end but was definitely satisfied with the finale!
I love Medium. I wish it had not been cancelled. It is one of my favorite shows. The season finale was sad. I guess it just goes along with the sadness of the show ending.
Finale:
Well I did not know that this was going to be a ‘finale’ and I was surprised, then saddened at the end of it. This show and the real Dubois family are very special. I am sorry to see it end tonight.
I am sad that the show was cancelled. The finale was great!
I am so sick of the writers who whine about not getting paid enough to the greedy board members deciding to cancel a great series such as this one! Really? Are you going to replace it with another stupid reality show? Maybe you can get that fat cow Snookie! Better yet, let’s see what your ratings are next season!
I thought it was going to be a cheese fest until she woke back up in the present. I LOVED
