ABC’s mid-season medical drama, Off the Map, recently concluded its first season on the air. The alphabet network’s been looking for a new hit drama and this one was produced by veteran producers of Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice. How does Off the Map stack up? Will it be cancelled or renewed for season two?
Off the Map revolves around six doctors who have “lost their way” and travel to a remote South American jungle to help those in need and to try to rediscover the reasons why they wanted to become physicians. The series features the talents of Caroline Dhavernas, Jason George, Jonathan Castellanos, Mamie Gummer, Martin Henderson, Rachelle Lefevre, Valerie Cruz, and Zach Gilford.
The medical drama premiered with a mediocre 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 7.57 million viewers. The TV series won its timeslot but was disrupted in some parts of the country by coverage of the Tucson Memorial. ABC decided to give Off the Map another chance to attract viewers by rerunning the first episode the following night, in place of a Private Practice rerun, and it retained much of the Grey’s Anatomy lead-in audience.
Unfortunately, that’s still not a great start and subsequent episodes of Off the Map essentially drew fewer and fewer viewers each week. The final episode of the season hit a series low and attracted a very poor 1.3 rating in the demo with only 3.80 million viewers.
Off the Map is the second-lowest scripted series on ABC that hasn’t already been officially cancelled, averaging a 1.7 in the demo and 4.96 million viewers. It ranks below doomed No Ordinary Family and just above doomed Detroit 1-8-7. In short, unless ABC really needs to keep Shonda Rhimes happy, there is no reason why the network would bring Off the Map back next year for season two.
What do you think? Do you think there’s any hope for Off the Map? Do you think it will be cancelled or renewed? Are you okay with the way the TV series ended?

My husband & I watched this show religiously every Wed. night. It was something different and always very exciting. The scenery was breathtaking too. Being in the higher end of the demographic, we felt it was one of the more interesting shows on TV and not just brainless drivel like most reality shows. Could it do better in a different time slot? Isn’t it worth a try…? We certainly think so. Please bring it back!
Great characters, excellent story lines, maybe it just needs more advertising. I’ve been hooked since the first episode. Please don’t cancel it.
I loved the show……..and have missed it. And the way it abruptly ended not good.
i completely AGREE !!! i was getting so sick of all the shows coming out these days… they are all close to the same thing. just different characteers. There is no other show like off the map. and the acting is actually good !! unlike some of these shows they have on now. i Am extremely upset that it may get cancelled. it is the only show that i religiously watch every week. ! PLEASE do NOTTT cancell !!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASSSSSEEEE keep this wonderful show!! ABC don’t cancelle it give it another chance!!
My husband and I loved “Off The Map’ and looked forward to each show. We even recorded every episode just to make sure we never missed an espisode. Please keep it going. Give it another chance. Our friends love it as well. It’s different and refreshing. Keep it..Keep it…Please!
I love the show. I hope that you decide to give it a second chance. I would love to see it on the summer line up.
Finally a show a little different from the rest, no votes to cast, great new bunch of young actors and story lines that usually do not involve to much guns and free violence. Don’t ge me wrong, I do watch some reality TV, like where the contestants do not need to “stomp” on the rest of them to survive!!! But for a change, this is a show where nobody is perfect and they do their best to help people. I really hope the show will come back.
My husband and I really enjoyed watching Off the Map every Wednesday. It was one of the few tv series we liked to watch. We’re not into any of the reality shows, there are just too many and we don’t like them anyways. Off the Map was actually pretty interesting and exciting to watch with so many good actors and actressess. I certainly hope you do give it another chance. I think more advertising would help and I think there would be a large audience as well.
I looked forward to watching off the map it was a wonderful show with lots of excitment and was refreshing to watch it would be a shame if it was not shown again
I love Off the Map and looked forward to it every week. I have no idea why the ratings are so low. Perhaps because of the lack of advertising for it or the late time are factors. PLEASE give season two a chance!
I looked forward to watching this show every week!! I will be so sad if they do not have a season 2. I think it needs to be advertised more and then it will get more viewers. GREAT show!
I loved the show, very interesting the way the doctors treated their patients in the jungle culture. Also pretty good plot, like each of the main characters.
I love off the map and watch it every wed night.
I am really upset that this show is being cancelled. Us of baby boomer age are getting tired of the reality tv shows and have finally found a few shows we can actually enjoy such as Off the Map and Brothers and Sisters. Off the Map is a great show and I agree that it didn’t get enough promotional time. October Road was another that was taken away from us. It seems like TV has tunnel vision when they decide what to keep or take away from us..we want story lines, not vote for this idol or this survivor or… Read more »
I love Off the Map—Please dont cancel it.
