canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

One Big Happy: Cancel or Keep the New NBC Sitcom?

by Trevor Kimball, April 29, 2015

One Big Happy TV show on NBC: canceled or renewed for season 2?NBC decided to hold One Big Happy until late in the TV season. That’s typically a sign that the network has very little confidence in a series. How has this sitcom been doing? Is it a surprise ratings success? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

On the One Big Happy sitcom, a pair of childhood best friends — he’s straight (Nick Zano) and she’s a lesbian (Elisha Cuthbert) — are still single as adults and decide to have a baby together. But then, he meets and marries the love of his life (Kelly Brook) and a different kind of family is born. The rest of the cast includes Rebecca Corry, Chris Williams, and Brandon Mychal Smith.

Debuting on March 17th, following The Voice and Undateable, One Big Happy attracted a 1.65 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.471 million viewers. It certainly wasn’t an impressive debut. The following week, the series dropped 30% in the numbers to a dismal 1.16 rating with 3.794 million.

The digits fell even lower in subsequent weeks and last night’s finale hit a new low with a 0.8 rating and just 3.08 million viewers. The season ended up averaging a 1.17 in the demo with 2.92 million.

Based on the ratings, there seems to be no reason for the network to bring this comedy back for another season. The numbers are terrible and have gotten worse almost every week. I suspect we’ve seen the last of this show.

But, what do you think? Do you like the One Big Happy series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

I love this Show! I hate that every time I get into a show they cancel it. I feel like they should give it a little time.

Goodness. What is it with this need for immediate gratification?!? It’s a new show and it needs more time for people to discover it and for the show to grow. As you said, they didn’t even drop it in to programming until late in the season. People that can watch TV at the time this airs had probably already committed to a program that comes on at the same time on another channel and that started at the beginning of the season, or just haven’t discovered this. It’s got potential and the characters are likeable. Give it a chance.

Like it or not, television is a business.

If people aren’t watching a show, it loses advertisers.

If it loses advertisers, it loses money.

If it loses money, it doesn’t make sense to keep it on the air.

This is a business, not a charity.

Something you forgot…businesses need consumers’ dollars to thrive. If we take our ‘business’ elsewhere because the networks just can’t wait (and, mind you, they are hardly replacing these shows with anything better), those advertisers’ advertisements don’t get seen, SO THEY LOSE. THEY NEED OUR VIEWERSHIP AND OUR DOLLARS. WE ARE THE ONES WITH THE POWER. KEEP IGNORING OUR VOICES AND WE’LL MOVE ON.

> THEY NEED OUR VIEWERSHIP AND OUR DOLLARS. What dollars? YOU aren’t paying them. You pay for cable. The cable company pays the broadcasters. The broadcasters pay for the show. The show is paid for by ADVERTISERS. Your “dollars” do nothing. If enough people don’t watch, the ads aren’t seen. If the ads aren’t seen, the show doesn’t make money. If the show doesn’t make money, it gets canned. Do you actually believe that because a few people watch, that the costs are covered? Do you actually believe that paying your cable bill somehow finances the shows?

I love this show ad it deserves at least a second season. It is funny as well. I love the dynamic of the characters but I agree they could expand a few characters and the show could take off.

It’s worth keeping around for a second season but it could use a few new cast members to give it a new kick.
