Tonight marks the season finale of NBC’s Parenthood. The ratings are down so will it end up being the series finale as well? Will the show be cancelled or return for a fourth season?
Parenthood debuted back in March of 2009 as a mid-season replacement series. The first season’s 13 episodes ended up averaging a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.38 million total viewers. The show was on the bubble but ended up getting renewed.
NBC didnt wait until mid-season to bring it back and season two kicked off in September 2010. With a full 22 episode season, the show’s averages dropped to a 2.1 in the demo and 5.34 million. Parenthood was on the bubble once again but, once again, it ended up being renewed.
This season, the ratings have dropped once again. The third season of Parenthood (not including tonight’s numbers) have averaged a 1.9 in the demo with 5.13 million. Based on the lower numbers at the start of the season, NBC only ordered 18 installments this time around.

Ordinarily, one would expect that Parenthood would be on the verge of cancellation once again. However, because the rest of NBC’s schedule is in such sorry shape, Parenthood’s ratings actually look pretty good by comparison.
Out of the 17 scripted programs that have aired on NBC this season, Parenthood has the sixth highest demo ratings, beating out shows like Community, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and Grimm. On our NBC ratings report card, Parenthood registers a firm “B.”
Based on the season numbers and the fact that Parenthood is co-produced by Universal Television, NBC’s own production company, it’s almost guaranteed to be back for a fourth season.
But, what do you think? Do you think Parenthood should be renewed or cancelled? How long should the series reasonably continue?

My favorite show, best evening dramatic series out there!
Best show ever I love it,please don’t cancel it.
This show is the highlight of my week. Real life scenarios, handled in a real life way. 3 Seasons of this show is not NEAR enough! I hope it comes back for Season 4 and a few more!
It should not even come up for consideration to cancel this show. It is a good family show and should continue.
I love this show. Tuesday is my fav night for TV. I watch Glee followed by a variety of reality shows – either on Fodo Network or Bravo depends on what sounds good and end the night with Parenthood. The actors are amazing!!!
Give Parenthood a new time slot. There is no reason for it to come on at 10:00. Everyone I know that watches the show likes it. It is the only tv show I make a point to watch.
Please do not cancel Parenthood. My wife and I love this show and never miss an episode
Please don’t cancel this show!!! Absolutely love it!!
Please dont cancel this show, it is such a good program. I have a son who is slightly autistic, and watching what Max goes through it helps to see what our son has gone through. It is a good family show, it would be nice to have it on earlier.
I hope Parenthood does return for a 4th season, I enjoy the characters and want to see them continue to develop and grow.
Please, please, please DON’T cancel Parenthood. It is our very favorite show, as well as the best show on TV. With all the inane, stupid shows that are on now, this is by far the best acted, most engaging and intelligent show on TV. To replace it with another stupid reality show would be a crime and an insult to people who enjoy this show. Please keep it on.
This is my favorite show on TV. Hard to follow it since they show a new one and then a rerun and a few new one. Never know for sure if it is going to be a new one or a rerun. Very timely issues on this show. Good family entertainment.
LOVE the show. Please do not cancel this.
This is my favorite TV show now! So much better than all the “reality” shows!!!! Maybe moving it to a better night, since Tuesdays have several good shows. Thursday would be a great night and would boost ratings for the show and the network also.
The show about the whole family traveling to see the grandmother was hilarious!!! and touching as well. Please, please keep this show; it is one of the few worthwhile shows left on regular TV.
I do love this show, but only ever watch it on Demand. The timeslot is aweful.
