Tonight marks the season finale of NBC’s Parenthood. The ratings are down so will it end up being the series finale as well? Will the show be cancelled or return for a fourth season?
Parenthood debuted back in March of 2009 as a mid-season replacement series. The first season’s 13 episodes ended up averaging a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.38 million total viewers. The show was on the bubble but ended up getting renewed.
NBC didnt wait until mid-season to bring it back and season two kicked off in September 2010. With a full 22 episode season, the show’s averages dropped to a 2.1 in the demo and 5.34 million. Parenthood was on the bubble once again but, once again, it ended up being renewed.
This season, the ratings have dropped once again. The third season of Parenthood (not including tonight’s numbers) have averaged a 1.9 in the demo with 5.13 million. Based on the lower numbers at the start of the season, NBC only ordered 18 installments this time around.

Ordinarily, one would expect that Parenthood would be on the verge of cancellation once again. However, because the rest of NBC’s schedule is in such sorry shape, Parenthood’s ratings actually look pretty good by comparison.
Out of the 17 scripted programs that have aired on NBC this season, Parenthood has the sixth highest demo ratings, beating out shows like Community, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, and Grimm. On our NBC ratings report card, Parenthood registers a firm “B.”
Based on the season numbers and the fact that Parenthood is co-produced by Universal Television, NBC’s own production company, it’s almost guaranteed to be back for a fourth season.
But, what do you think? Do you think Parenthood should be renewed or cancelled? How long should the series reasonably continue?

This is absolutely the best show on TV. It definitely should be renewed.
This is a great show for all ages! Real life drama about a real life family – great acting and stories every week! How can NBC even contemplate canceling this series? Television needs more of these types of dramas – quality acting and good writing – hooked me right from the first episode 3 seasons ago. PLEASE do not cancel this series!!!
Please, please, please renew!
YES! I love it & look forward to seeing every week.
YES! Keep it on the air! Both my husband and I enjoy it.
PLEASE keep Parenthood on! My husband and I watch this show every week and I tell everyone I know who doesn’t watch that they should try it. It is such a great show with a fabulous storyline and well-written characters. We don’t want to see it go!
We love Parenthood…please do not cancel, ever since it began we have watched every episode. surprised there were not more shows. season 3 ending so quickly seems unfair, why so early? Please continue….we need more shows like this….miss brothers and sisters too.
This show has been my favorite TV show since it first aired. I rarely watch it live but DVR it so I can give it my 100% attention each week. PLEASE don’t take this excellent show off the air. I am already down to watching only 4-5 TV shows a week on network TV and I’d be devastated to lose such a highly entertaining and enjoyable much-loved show.
I love this show. Can’t wait for it to come on! What’s wrong with people? I think they just have not had the opportunity to watch it. And, I want to say that the last episode this year was absolutely fabulous! To let us, the audience, see the beauty of a family coming together joyfully. We need more of this type of show – instead of more shoot ’em ups!
Love, love this show. Would be very sad to see it go. Some shows start off slow but can end up being winners. I must say though, that if the show does fail at least they gave it a good chance. I find all too often some shows are yanked before being given a second or third season.
My favorite television show. Downton Abbey is also wonderful, but the Braverman family is irresistible. The combination of great writing and a stellar acting ensemble make this show extremely relatable to almost any type of family and all demographics. My husband and I relate to Camille and Zeke, but love watching the “kids” because they remind us of our kids – both the troubles they get into and the love they have for one another. Max’s autism is a new frontier for us, but light shed on any painful disability helps us learn to empathize with people who face challenges.… Read more »

Best show on!!!
I LOVE Parenthood – one of the best dramas to come along in a very long time. Please do not cancel this series!
Must see TV. My favorite show and my 20-something daughter’s favorite show, too…spans the demographics advertisers love, so what’s the problem?! PLEASE bring it back!
YES! Parenthood needs to be on. I absolutely love this show. I admit I dvr it because I want to have the time to truly appreciate watching it. Another time slot might work better. Reality tv is a big turn off for me. I am sure that lots of people like that kind of thing but many of us do not. Parenthood is awesome, the characters all meld together into a normal type family, that so many of us can relate to. You would be doing an injustice to take this show off the air. I loved Brothers and Sisters… Read more »
