Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

My kids, girl 13 and boy 16, and I loved the show. I can’t believe that they would cancel it after only 4 shows. We were just starting to remember what time it was on and then it was gone!
The show was funny and should come back, give it more time to grow on people.
I think it’s a good show but Sunday night animation domination was the worst possible time slot for it. I will admit I only watched the first episode but that isn’t because the show wasn’t good but because it did not fit into the nights series of shows. The line up they have now (and had before) is perfect no need to try and mess with it.
i loved the show. i am quite dissapointed its not on any more
Its very “Malcolm in the Middle”ish.. just a tad less eccentric. It’s enjoyable, but never really had a chance in the Sunday “Animation Domination” line up (hasn’t been the first time a live action comedy failed to deliver in that time slot either)
I love this show! This wit and humor is so awesome!! The tiny kid is my favorite!! I have to admit though, I probably didn’t help w/ the ratings since I hulued every single show 🙁 The priorities in my house are a bit different…we have 3 computers and only 1 TV so, I’m usually out numbered in the selection of what show we end up watching. Anyways, I miss this show!!
oh, and I like that the hired dad reminds me of Jack Black…super funny!!
sons of tucson is an awesome show i loved it before i even saw the first episode because i loved “reaper” which also starred labine he was my favirote character in that show but it got canceled and i was happy to hear sons of tucson was starring him but sadly i dont contribute to the ratings because i watch all my tv shows online but awesome show and love labine!!!
i looooove this show, i could never remember when it came on so i always had to catch it online… maybe a few more commercials/previews?
A combination of The Middle, Jack Black gone wild, and some sort of Judd Apatow family series, this TV series HAS to win. I’d say pick an 8pm slot on Wednesdays or Mondays. The demo G for this series is men between 10-50 because those are all the ages that can relate to the lies, the manipulations, and the situations most men get into… women should watch just to learn something about guys.
BRING THIS SHOW BACK SOON!
This show was awesome from the first episode! They better bring it back, because I’m sick of all the good shows being pulled without a chance. Wonderfalls was another example of an awesome show that was pulled too early….
I WANT IT BACK!
i love this show…wish it would come back. its not bad at all especially with robbie…hahahha hope it comes back
needs to be on at 5
I think the show is funny & has poential. they need more fun comedies on air to watch and escape all the reality shows that are on. Everytime a fun laid back sitcom appears it seems like the networks pull it before it has the time to gather a following. Hope it stays for a fighting chance.
This show is absolutely hilarious and should be around for many seasons to come. i think that if it gets on in a better time slot it will definitely help because this show had me hooked from episode one and i am so disappointed to see it postopened. The actors cast to play the characters are all absolutely perfect and help make the show what it is. i really hope this show comes back, ill be devastated if it doesn’t.
