Last week, FOX made the decision to pull their new Sunday night sitcom, Sons of Tucson, after just four airings. Several sites have reported that the show has been cancelled but in truth, it’s on hiatus.
Sons of Tucson follows a sporting goods store clerk (Tyler Labine) who lives in his car. He’s hired by three boys (Benjamin Stockham, Frank Dolce, and Matthew Levy) to play their father for a school meeting after their real dad goes to jail for banking fraud. In case of future emergencies, he moves into their tool shed. The series also features Sarayu Rao, Edwin Habacon, and Natalie Martinez.
When it debuted last month, the ratings for Sons of Tucson weren’t good and pretty much got worse every week. That’s not a surprise to those behind the show since they believe it was airing in the wrong timeslot.
A spokesman for the show said, “FOX bought Sons of Tucson in the hope of resurrecting the genre for the network and hoped to eventually build out a live action comedy block night. They looked to Justin Berfield and the [Malcolm in the Middle] creative team to do just this.”

“They bought the show to put on at 8:30pm and despite initial audience testing results reporting against it, the network top brass decided to put Sons of Tucson on much later at 9:30pm, which draws a much different, less family audience. How does a family show do during a non-family hour? Well… not good.”
With such disappointing ratings, it’s no surprise that the network has pulled it from the schedule. Labine has signed on to another sitcom for CBS but Sons of Tucson is in first position. If FOX decides to renew it, he’ll be obligated to return to Tucson.
The series is scheduled to return on June 6th at 7:30pm. Unfortunately, that’s not a great timeslot either but it’s at least a little more appropriate for the show. If the series is to be renewed, it has an uphill battle — especially since most outlets are reporting that it’s already been cancelled and it won’t return from hiatus until after FOX has already announced its 2010-11 schedule.
Berfield isn’t ready to give up the series and insists that the series just needs time to grow and even offered to donate half his producer fee to charity if the show is renewed for season two.
Though the show hasn’t been officially cancelled, it looks like Sons of Tucson is going to need some serious charity (and ratings) to get renewed.
What do you think? Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?

Hi, I do agree with everyone they should bring the show back, as long as it is written good, and I agree with the business is business I stated that in my previous post I have below, I am not why it showed up as anonymus. Well I do understand what you are saying about watching something other than reality thats just funny, but I belive the Simpsons were also for the younger, but more mature audience as in teenagers. You said “I love watching the kids pick on the “dad” and love watching the “dad” be so stupid he… Read more »
FOX did try to give make it a success. While 9:30pm might be late, it was given the lead in of Family Guy which is FOX’s number 1 comedy at the moment. I do think pullling it after 4 airings is a little quick and unfair, but buisness is buisness. 7:30pm isnt much better, now, no promotion, and no lead in. So if you ask me, SoT had a better shot staying put at 9:30pm with the Family Guy lead in, than 7:30pm with no lead in.
I like turtles.
My husband and I both loved Sons of Tucson when it was on, we were scratching our heads trying to figure out what happened to it when it stopped coming on. To us, it seemed like a great series that kept us both laughing. We seriously miss Tucson and wish they would hurry up and put it back on! I would agree though that an eariler time slop would be better, since we have two babies two and under, and have to wake up for work each morning.
Well I do understand what you are saying about watching something other than reality thats just funny, but I belive the Simpsons were also for the younger, but more mature audience as in teenagers. You said “I love watching the kids pick on the “dad” and love watching the “dad” be so stupid he doesn’t realize what’s going on.” As sad as it sounds this is reality this actually happens to some kids in real life even though it is fake. My arguement is really based on why the ratings went down and the show is not on more. I… Read more »
Crystal, I do realize this is a show and not a reality show, but you are missing the point. It doesnt matter fact or fiction. The writers ablility needs to get the audiences attention. It has to be belivable to the audience or ratings will go low. Example your not going to go to a concert and pay 60 dollars to go see an artist if the story he or she is singing is not belivable wether the story he/she is singing is true or not. If that happens the ratings go down and sales and profit margins go down.… Read more »
I do understand what is being said. However, we come from a society that is made up of useless entertainment. Take the Simpsons, there is no real value taken from that show. There is no moral at the end or story line that makes you turn in to it next week, you just do. Some people just enjoy the break from reality. I work in the legal field, and it really is nice just to turn on a show that is out there being funny. I love watching the kids pick on the “dad” and love watching the “dad” be… Read more »
Tweety my point exactly when you read my previous post that i wrote on may 10th about the writers poor writing. What you said does make sense and the audience would belive it and leave us the audience what is going to happen until the next episode. Ha maybe you should be the writer for the show. As far as this show not being cancelled its still not on only aprox 4 episodes ran.
I watched it and thought parts were okay but didnt understand why the guy was being bullied when he has the upper hand. He can go to child services anytime without them even knowing it. So why is he not working with these kids instead of being blackmailed by them. The show’s premise is great but the thought that is going into it needs to be more thought out. they need to have a common goal and know that anytime one side or the other thinks they have the upper hand that things can fall apart. right now all I… Read more »
Yeah…umm….do you not realize this is a show??? It’s not based on reality. Just saying….just saying…
One of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. Me and my buddies can relate to Tyler… and unfortunately, his weird house robbing buddy. I bought all episodes for my ipod.
This show, if lost, will be a sad loss for people wanting to hear every word that is said, because every word is hilarious. I get it, I hope more people do. This show could be a major hit, like “My Name is Earl”, if given the chance.
I was afraid this show had been canceled! It’s good to know it isn’t. I love this show! It’s really cute and funny. Every episode I wanted it to go on longer than a 1/2 hour. I like Tyler Labine’s acting since I used to watch Reaper and liked him in that too. This show had a terrible time slot so I always watched it by dvr. Glad to know they moved it.
This IS a great show. Personally, I think it would do really well on a different night. Maybe on Thursday, seeing as FOX really seems to cram that night with unimportant jabber. But I really loved this show. Thought it was hilarious, and I sincerely hope it sticks. For me, it was like watching a shortened version of Big Daddy every week [which is a good thing].
Good show, give it a chance.
I watched the show, the advertisement looked good before it first aired, but the prboblem is in the script writing. When you tell a story as in singing you need to make the viewers belive it, and this show just does not show that. The cast is good, but the plot is terrible, it seems like this show had an idea, but the truth is it’s very disorganized. the episodes should leave you wondering whats happening next, and want to watch it time after time, but it just seems like it was hurried together to make a dollar, no wonder… Read more »
The question was, “Do you think the show has a realistic chance at being renewed for season two?”. I guess that is has nothing to do with the fact that it is a GREAT show nor the fact that everyone loves it who has seen it. The answer to that question lies in the hands of the people making the decision to keep it or cancel it. Are they wise enough to know they have a winner? or not.
C’mon….!!! This is a GREAT show. One of the best I’ve seen in years. Why don’t they let us watch the shows on FANCAST or HULU like everyone else? Please don’t cancel and let us view online! C’mon. I think the viewers need to control what we can watch. It obviously has nothing to do with what we want to see. Who makes these terrible decisions to pull great shows anyway?
