Tonight, TNT airs the last episode of Southland’s fifth season. Will the cop drama be cancelled or renewed for a fifth season instead? How are the ratings?
Southland follows the lives of a group of police officers who “serve and protect” the residents of Los Angeles. The ensemble cast includes Michael Cudlitz, Benjamin McKenzie, Regina King, Shawn Hatosy, C. Thomas Howell, and Tom Everett Scott.
The fourth season of Southland attracted an average of 1.84 million total viewers with a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. That was down from season three which averaged 1.99 million and a 0.7 in the demo.
Season five dropped even lower. The nine episodes have dropped 24% to 1.4 million with a 0.5 rating. Dallas, which has been airing on Monday nights, has done much better — averaging 2.67 million and a 0.8 rating.
TNT has taken great pride in airing Southland but these numbers are not good and they could easily choose to cancel it. Or, they could bargain to give the series one final season for closure.
The cast and crew have produced just 43 episodes over the five seasons and unfortunately even one more season won’t give them enough for much of a syndication package.
If TNT does cancel the show, viewers may not have long to miss some of the show’s stars. McKenzie, King, and Hatosy have all signed on to star in new TV show pilots. If Southland does continue, they’ll return to TNT.

If you bring it back, lose the writers who turned it into a soap opera. I remember “What Makes Sammy Run”. Best hour of TV in decades. These last few episodes had to be written by a daytime TV writer. The officers need not be so angst ridden. Just let them do their jobs and let the streets be the story, not the personal lives of the cops.
This better be renewed. I wouldn’t know what to do if I didn’t find out what happened. TNT thank you for picking up and continuing a great show. I hope you make the right choice and continue it for another 5 seasons. Although I didn’t get to see anybody get shot like I was hoping. I did feel some closure to Hank’s killers. 5/5 Top notch season TNT. I hope the writers keep up the astounding work.
this is a great cop show one of the best Ive ever seen I will be very disapointed if it is canceled
The show police drama Southland is so thought provoking on so many levels.It should be renewed for the proper closure it has earned.I have recorded numerous episodes.The characters need/deserve.Closure of some type the action in realistic.It would not give loyal viewers justice if it were not renewed.I know some ot the lead characters have pilots on other shows..But Southland has earned the right to be renewed.
Please do not cancel southland! Love this show and everyone in it ! Didn’t like how it ended.Please keep it on for another season!!
It needs to come back but that ending had me jump out of my chair yelling at the TV. I just get wrapped up into this show and hope we at least get a final season or TV movie or something to give a true finale.
I love this show!! I hope it come back next season. Maybe TNT should consider placing it in a different slot or day.
Please don’t cancel this show, give it another timeslot…it competes with Chicago Fire; same time, same night. maybe that’s why the ratings have dropped…I love both shows and it drives me crazy that I have to tape one or the other.
Southland is a fantastic show,, the acting, the writing,, doesn’t get any better. I sincerely hope TNT doesn’t cancel this show,, let’s face it TNT,, this has got to be one of the best shows on this network, Leverage is gone,, which was a great show and with no warning, just gone,, please do not do this to Southland,, save us from anymore alleged “reality” shows. How this show or any of the actors have not won an Emmy is beyond me. I really hope to see Southland on the schedule for TNT.

Love this show, sure hope they keep it going. Especially after tonight’s finale! Would hate for it to end on cliffhanger, nothing makes me quite as mad as this happening!
