Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
Renew the show. Like the plot.
GREAT story line and very applicable to today’s world trends. Can’t wait for the next show. For SURE renew. It will only be more relevant going forward.
To Whom It May Concern: I’m 47-years old and one of the biggest fans of Katherine Heigl. Please do not cancel STATE OF AFFAIRS. I really feel it is a great show and in my book, STATE OF AFFAIRS and Katherine Heigl deserves an award or two. Katherine is also an excellent movie actress as well as a TV actress. If you see or hear from Katherine Heigl, please tell Katherine to please send me an autographed picture of her to my address. Any questions you may have, please write or call me. Thank you. Pls renew the show!!!
The characters are great, the stories so accurate and different from other series !
Just can’t wait to see more!
My friends and I love love love State Of Affairs! It’s so well written and keeps us on the edge of our seat where we can’t wait for the next episode. Please give it a chance to continue. Many shows take a little while before they really take off and get noticed. This is such a brilliant show!
LOVE THIS SHOW!!! please renew!
Please renew State of Affaires. I have found it to be at least as good as Madam Secretary and Good Wife. It is a thinking person’s show and a strong drama. I am baffled by the poor ratings. Maybe a different time slot would help. I think it should be given a second chance to find its audience.
Please keep State of Affairs on TV. It’s good to have some viewing that keeps our minds thinking that’s not vulgars and promoting stupidity like Mob Wife’s.
Please don’t cancel – I thought State of Affairs was applicable to current ‘state of affairs – no pun intended. I have a neighbor who just served 10 years in the Navy and he commented on how accurate it was. Another viewer mentioned that it needed to air earlier – I agree. Ten is too late.
Love, love, love this show! Please give it more time!
love it best show since 24
At first I was put off by the choice of Katherine Heigl just because she does have a bad rep and did not watch just because of that, however I just finished the whole season on hulu and loved it. The show itself definitely trumped the decision to cast Heigl and surprisingly she does a good job. I would renew.
one of the best shows since 24 love it PLEASE bring it back!!
RENEW THIS SHOW!!!
Definitely renew!!! This has been a great action packed good tv show & a terrific cast of characters. Love Heigle in this. Please don’t let Nick be dead!
