Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
I always anticipate Monday nights to watch the show ( State of Affairs) ..was so disappointed not to find it on its regular time slot…i really want it back !
It broke my heart to hear you might end this program’! I look forward to Monday nights’ RENEW… RENEW….
My husband and I love this show, please please renew the show. We like the cast and the plot of the show.
Loved the show, can’t wait for season 2!!
PLEASE PLEASE renew State Of Affairs I absolutely love this show. Please don’t cancel it
We love this show and so look forward to watching it each Monday. Cancel many of the gross reality shows that we really could care less about. Please renew this show as it is exceptional.
Yes, I absolutely agree. Cancel some reality show–ugh! Get a life, people. Read a book, watch State of Affairs and learn something,
I definitely would keep the show. I watch it because I think it’s a really good show, but I would change the time slot. I do not watch The Voice and maybe others like myself that enjoy State of Affairs are not fans of The Voice so having The Voice as the lead in is more a turn off than a turn in.
Definitly renew it, the acting was great. We need to see year 2.
Renew I think the show had a bit of a ruff start with the “creative differences”, I believe those of us that enjoy the show would like to see it given a second season.
Hell yes. Renew !!!! I love this show more than the Blacklist and I love that allot. I wish there were more intelligent shows with amazing actors like this. I loved every single cast member and Katherine H. Rocks!
I would definitely keep this show. It is smart a show with action and drama. Currently it has left us hanging and wanting more. I would really hate to see this show be cancelled, especially when it is so hard to find a good show on these days. Stations seem to cancel the really good shows. I hope it doesn’t happen to this one. My wife and I both enjoy it.
This one of the better shows on TV. Please have the second season. Love the intrigue and acting is great.
This is actually one of the better shows and I hope that NBC it another opportunity as it is extremely well written and the actors are all superb. My family and I are fans!
This is an awesome show!! We were disappointed when the first night the Blacklist was not on TV but watched State of Affairs and so glad we did…love it. Please don’t cancel the actor do a great job and the story line is so good. Told all of our friends to watch the show it is so good.
State of Affairs is truly one of my favorite shows. It is well-acted, suspenseful, and not at all trite like so many other TV dramas. While Blacklist is my #1, this show is a strong #2. I can’t believe the ratings are so poor that it may be cancelled! I tuned in tonight anxious to see the next episode only to learn I may have seen the final one last week. Please do more market research to see if it may just be the time slot.
My husband and I LOVE the show! Katherine Heigle is great! I love watching her on prime time. Please renew the show! We will be really sad if it is cancelled.
