Both CBS and NBC have launched new TV shows that revolve around smart blonde women who hold important government positions in Washington, DC. CBS’ Madam Secretary has already been renewed for a second season. What will happen to NBC’s State of Affairs? Will it be renewed or cancelled?
State of Affairs follows a top CIA analyst (Katherine Heigl) who assembles the President of the United States’ Daily Briefing (PDB), weighing the vital security issues that face the nation. She has a close personal relationship with the commander-in-chief (Alfre Woodard) as she was once engaged to the president’s now-deceased son. The rest of the cast of this dramatic thriller includes Adam Kaufman, Sheila Vand, Cliff Chamberlain, Tommy Savas, and David Harbour.
Taking over for NBC’s highly-rated series The Blacklist, State of Affairs debuted in November to a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.69 million viewers. It was a solid start that was no doubt aided by its strong lead-in The Voice. Some people were also possibly expecting to find a new episode of The Blacklist in the timeslot instead.
In week two, despite still having a strong lead-in, State of Affairs’ ratings dropped more than 36% to a 1.4 in the demo with 5.39 million. They rose up a bit in week three but have been falling ever since. Last week’s installment hit new series lows with a 0.7 in the demo and 3.62 million viewers.
Though NBC had high hopes for this series, State of Affairs is just not measuring up. The network is poised to finish airing the 13 episode season (there are four episodes remaining after tonight’s) but it’s hard to imagine that they’d consider renewing it for a second season with poor ratings like these.
NBC entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt recently said, “I’m disappointed in what it’s been doing [in the ratings] the last couple of weeks… It’s a show that I think is a really fine show, so I’m scratching my head a little bit about why we can’t get more people to be there for it.”
There’s still time for the numbers to improve but it doesn’t seem likely they’d be good enough to save the show. Hopefully the season finale will offer viewers some measure of closure to the ongoing storylines.
But, what do you think? Do you like the State of Affairs TV show? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew the series for a second season? How would you improve this show if it was renewed?
RENEW! Yes, please. I love this show.
Awesome show!! I will be highly disappointed if this show is cancelled. I, like many other working individuals DVR the show and are so excited to watch it. It is amazing!!
How they the networks decide to cancel or renew a tv show is ridiculous. The show State of Affairs should be renewed and not cancelled. Even if ratings show it wasn’t watched at the time of showing doesn’t mean it wasn’t tivoed to watch later. It is a great show riviting and suspenseful great characters and captivating storyline. Please renew
I would definitely keep this show but a couple things should be considered. 1. Too much is being left for Heigl to carry. There should be a couple of under-lying sub-plots always going on in this show. A kidnapping of a government official, an unexplained death of a Supreme Court Judge, A sex scandal of either the Presidents husband or someone opposing the President in upcoming election…dirty, shocking, gritty, sexy, suspenseful side lines!! Presidents husband is said to have had a long time affair with a younger man, who ends up being found dead, branded and stuffed into a trash… Read more »
Too true. You have to promote the show to get the 19-49 demographic you need. And make Heigl a co-executive producer so she has some skin in the game. She needs to work the potential audience and build desire to see the show.
Please renew the show! An earlier time slot would probably help ratings.
Great show…acting, writing. Please don’t cancel.
Great show…please do not cancel!!
Please do not cancel I love this show!!
Cancel this show. Its absolutely ridiculous with its storylines and the thought that Heigl can play a bad ass is laughable. There are other great actors on this show but they need more air time. Right now I refer to this show as the Katherine Heigl hour. Please do us all a favor and lets move on to more intelligent shows with believable and captivating characters.
You must be watching Grey’s Anatomy. Heigl is doing a terrific job, now that she has a role with some meat on it.
great show!!! best on tv…renew renew renew
One of the best shows on tv PLESE DONT CANCEL
Keep ,,love this show

Please bring back State of Affairs for season 2. The last episode was an edge your seat thriller. Please don’t leave us hanging in the wind as those fighter jets fly dangerously overhead. This is a great show that deserves at least another season.
State of Affairs is one of the best shows on network TV – great acting and great writing. I am amazed that such a quality show is being considered for the chopping block. Please do NOT cancel!
