canceled + renewed TV shows - TV Series Finale

The Returned: TV Show Cancelled by A&E; No Season Two

by Trevor Kimball, June 15, 2015

The Returned TV show on A&E: canceled, no season 2Another TV show won’t be coming back. A&E has cancelled The Returned after one season of 10 episodes.

On The Returned, the residents of a small town have their lives turned upside down when some of their loved ones appear to return from the dead. The cast includes Mark Pellegrino, Tandi Wright, Jeremy Sisto, India Ennenga, Sophie Lowe, Mat Vairo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kevin Alejandro, Sandrine Holt, Dylan Kingwell, Aaron Douglas, Rhys Ward, Leah Gibson, Agnes Bruckner, and Michelle Forbes.

The series debuted with disappointing ratings on March 9th, garnering a 0.58 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.54 million viewers. The numbers got much worse as the season progressed and the 10 episodes ended up averaging a 0.38 demo rating with 1.05 million viewers.

To no surprise, the cable channel has decided not to order any additional episodes. The defacto series finale of The Returned aired on May 11th.

What do you think? Do you like The Returned TV show? Do you think it should have been cancelled or renewed for a second season?

I really liked the Returned — I think perhaps it had low ratings because Resurrection was starting to get weak. That show started strong and was very intriguing, but was starting to lose my interest. The Returned had a much better story line.

A&E also cancelled that show I liked with Mira Sorvino. Can’t remember the name. Sorry, I’m an old broad. Actually, I really think this is the golden age of television. Even if you just have basic cable.

Damn. I really liked this show. Especially with two of my favorite actors, Jeremy Sisto and the incredible Michelle Forbes. These networks don’t give shows much of a chance, ya’ know?

The Returned might have been a decent remake if they hadn’t copied scene-for-scene to the original french version. Don’t understand why America always needs to remake everything. Where’s the original ideas??

I agree. I heard the French series is going to have a Season 2. Their version was much better, for some reason, it seemed more real??

wypn said “Constantine, Returned, State of Affairs, Madame Secretary, Resurrection, Allegiance, etc, etc. What really sucks is that I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like these shows. ”
I don’t like any of the above mention shows and apparently many others don’t watch them either since all by Madame was cancelled.
TV is all business. Would you invest your money in a failing business even if you thought the product was good? That’s how TV companies view shows, as products. Some survive, many fail. The consumer ultimately decides.

I don’t get why they cancel shows? I guess the execs don’t like straight people, lesbians, Mexicans, bigots, dead people, resurrected people, etc. What do they like?

This is one of the worst tv seasons in a long time. The networks have cancelled so many great shows and kept some terrible shows. I agree with the DVR issue. How can you tell viewership? I love the DVR to record the good shows. Constantine, Returned, State of Affairs, Madame Secretary, Resurrection, Allegiance, etc, etc. What really sucks is that I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like these shows. Constantine got shot down but one network picked up The Mindy Project? Really? It sucks and so does New Girl even though I love Zoey Deschanel. Dallas was also a… Read more »

wypn you said it all!! I do like Penny Dreadful on Showtime. If you’ve not seen, watch the Comic-Con cast interviews on YouTube. They will intrigue you. The cast is one of the best.

All the shows you listed were very low rated shows. TV is a business and advertisers pay for the shows to air if shows aren’t drawing the 18-49 demo which none of these shows did they will be cancelled since advertisers will not pay high enough rates for commercial time. DVR and delayed viewing where commercials can be skipped or are deleted don’t pay the bills so those views don’t count. You just happen to like shows that not enough 18-49 year olds are interested in watching. Until the rating system changes, don’t hold your breath, that’s reality. Something has… Read more »

Hey Guest; we who will miss certain shows know the financial details. We just like to have our say too. I never saw a promotion for The Returned and came upon it by accident. I really do not understand why Bates Motel is on its fifth season. But then maybe I do as my son really likes it. But we both like Defiance, Walking Dead, etc. In fact, my son got me into those shows. I really would like to know the % of 18-49 year olds who actually watch a show in its time spot as opposed to DVRing,… Read more »

This is to “guest”. Even if we “dvr” a show, we’re still paying, cable tv isn’t free. Its really disgusting how people just keep getting screwed and they don’t even know it. When cable tv first came out, it was the “Z” channel, no commercials. Because you paid for “Z” channel. Somewhere along the way, as more and more companies popped up, and competition grew, we were still paying and advertising was also paying, so these companies make money hand over fist. If you want to view movies with no advertising, you have to spend a lot more money for,… Read more »

I’ll be honest, this show started out strong at first and then just stalled, grinding it’s wheels. I stuck it out, wondering where it was all heading, and then the finale just sorta ended and I’m, like, ” is this it?! Is this how it ends?! Was hoping for another season, just so they could tie up some verryy loose ends. Not gonna happen. Frustrating.

I really wanted The Returned to return. Big let down. I did not know Madame Secretary was canceled. With DVR’s how do the networks know what viewership % is anyway? I am with Carolyn. What is the point of watching anything on TV.

Figures, just when the show starts to get interesting it is cancelled. I wish you would at least finish out the shows before you drop them. Then there would be a closure. FYI most people DVr or tvo the shows, should you not count that as watchers as well? Leave the darn show on another season to give it the send off or finish it deserves. You keep crap on tv and pass over on good shows that make you think… Shame shame…
