The CW handed out some early renewals today and there really weren’t any surprises, especially if you look at the struggling network’s overall numbers. Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, 90210, Gossip Girl, and America’s Next Top Model will all be back next season. What about Life Unexpected, Melrose Place, One Tree Hill, and Smallville?
First, to the renewals…
90210 is set to come back for season three. The show is down in the ratings and is one of the network’s weaker performers. However, the network has plenty of holes to fill in its schedule and apparently isn’t ready to give up on the show just yet. The network is dropping Jennie Garth and Rob Estes in an attempt to focus even more heavily on the younger characters next season.
America’s Next Top Model will be back for two more cycles, numbers 15 and 16. The reality show has been in a decline for years but apparently the benefit still outweighs the costs on the venerable reality competition.

Gossip Girl will be coming back for season three as well. The show is first among the CW’s target demographic of women 18-34, making it a lock for renewal.
Supernatural will be back for a sixth season. The show is having a great year and has improved last season’s performance in women 18-34 by 29%. Series creator Eric Kripke said that he planned to finish the show after five seasons. He’ll supposedly still be heavily involved but won’t be the day-to-day showrunner. Stars Jared Padelecki and Jensen Ackles are reportedly signed for only one more season and have hinted that they want out.
The Vampire Diaries will be returning for its second season. Despite airing on the most competitive night of television, Thursdays, the freshman show is the network’s highest rated show overall and in the 18-34 demographic.
What about the CW’s other shows? Are they cancelled? They aren’t all goners but at least one, likely two, won’t be back.
Melrose Place is the network’s biggest disappointment of the season and it looks nearly impossible that it’ll be back for a sophomore year. A dozen of the 18 ordered episodes have aired so far. The remaining six will begin airing on March 9th after a three month hiatus of originals.
One Tree Hill has been around for seven seasons and hasn’t been having a very successful season. The series could come back or it could end. Its fate will likely will come down to costs or the faith that the network has in other options.
Conversely, Life Unexpected is the new kid on the block. It got off to a decent start but has been losing steam week after week. The execs are likely waiting awhile longer to see what happens. Four of 13 episodes have aired so far.
Smallville is performing well, especially considering the show is in its ninth season and is airing on Friday nights. It’s a lock for renewal and could only end if Tom Welling doesn’t want to continue.
What do you think? Are you happy that the shows have been renewed? Would you trade any of them for the four on the bubble?
Smallville needs to end…………………………..ninth seasons, it is ENOUGH! Keep OTH and life’s unexpected. Give this new show a chance, come on! Look at Smallville, it needs to put this to rest.
Yay! for Smallville, I have been a faithful viewer since the very first episode. Besides that damn Tom Welling is so fine!
I still love OTH after all these years and have been really happy with how the show has progressed without Lucas & Peyton. I would love to see it stay at least one more year to give the new characters and stories some more time to grow.
I LOVE OTH–IF IT GOES OFF FOR GOOD I HAVE NO REASON TO CONTINUE TO WATCH CW
I love One Tree Hill and I just watch that new episode this morning but I saw the previews about 4 final episodes and I was shock but I don’t want that show to end! like what Fox canceled The O.C. because they said it has a bad ratings and that season was getting better but SAVE ONE TREE HILL! Life Unexpected seems like a good show but The mother and father just needs to control themselves, same with her bf just needs to clean his act. Gossip Girl is awesome but why would it be canceled? that show is… Read more »
One tree hill is getting really really boring. Jamie is soooo annoying. Cancel it.
I just love OTH and a lot of my friends have gotten hooked on it since my husband and I started watching it in the beginning. We do not watch Gossip Girl or 90210. Cancel one of those. I thought it was a mistake to revisit 90210. We do not watch America’s Next Top Model or Supernatural either. I am however glad to see that Vampire Diaries will be back but at least put it on a different night.
PLEASE SAVE ONE TREE HILL!
I love One Tree Hill and want it to comeback as well at Life unexpected!!!!
I agree, I think OTH has issues that people can relate to in their own lives. Cancel 90210 or Gossip Girl, BUT KEEP ONE TREE HILL. It was getting pretty whiny with Peyton and Lucus, love them, but the show is great without them. The new people have filled in really well.
I love One Tree Hill and I want it to come back!!!!!!!! It would a huge mistake to cancel it.
I absolutely LOVE One Tree Hill..I watch it EVERY monday night and it would be a huge mistake to cancel it. I was afraid it wouldnt be the same OTH without Lucas and Peyton, but ive come to love it even MORE. please SAVE OTH!
I NEVER miss One Tree Hilll! It is a great show and I love watching it. Ending it would be a mistake. It is a real down to earth show about things that happen in peoples lives I hope that you keep One Tree Hill around alittle longer! It is an Awesome show!
I love OTH and think it should go on for another season. I was afraid it wouldn’t be as good without Peyton and Lucas, but I actually like it better without them in it. I would trade any of the other shows for OTH!!!
I love One Tree Hill and would definately want it to return. I don’t mind that Lucas and Peyton left because their story line was getting a little whinny for my taste. I love some of the new characters and would like to see how things go. I think Nathan and Haley are strong enough characters to keep it going…especially with that adorable kid Jamie. Keep it around for another season at least see how it goes. And if it must end make sure its wrapped up nicely with happy ending!
Wow to svilleoth you really get into your shows. i watch both but i feel one tree hill has left it’s early days. this season got very raunchy and that seemed weird with the show because it always seemed wholesome to me. i think one tree hill has gone south since lucas and peyton left. i do believe smallville has some life left. i remember the same thing happening last year, they didn’t announce the renewal until late because they were waiting to see if tom welling would sign on, i think it’s the same deal this year.
