ABC’s had mixed success with their new shows this year, but what about Downward Dog? The TV show just premiered in May and we want to know if you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season.
Based on the web series of the same name, the comedy follows the day-to-day life of Nan (Allison Tolman), as told by her increasingly lonely and philosophical dog, Martin (voiced by Samm Hodges). The cast also includes Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, and Andrew Gorell.
Downward Dog has brought in pretty poor ratings for ABC so far. Currently, the sitcom is earning an average rating of 0.87 in the 18-49 demo and 4.40 million viewers. The network held the comedy until very late in the season and produced just eight episodes — likely signs that ABC doesn’t have a lot of faith in the show.
However, even with falling ratings, does Downward Dog deserve a second chance in your book? What do you think? Should ABC renew this canine comedy or cancel it?
6/24 update: ABC has cancelled the Downward Dog TV show after one season. Details here.
Downward Dog is a unique, funny and touching show. I don’t want it to be over, and really hope to see it again. Great writers, and I love Martin’s voice, it suits him. Mistake to cancel it.
I think the series would have done a lot better if the characters weren’t so stereotypical. The clueless boss was WAY too clueless. The bumbling hipsters were way too bumbling. And the dog – the very star of the show – was so grating to listen to, I often felt like punching the TV to try to get it to stop skipping on the word “like”. I am known, by my family, as the too-critical-television-watcher, as I seem to find fault with pretty much everything that is on the TV. But, even my ever-patient wife was beginning to feel like… Read more »
Yes. I enjoyed Downward Dog and would watch Season Two. Should have been promoted showing Martin talking. It made me wonder if my dog had the same thoughts.
I will watch season 2 and even reruns. finally a funny show for a change and someone wants it cancelled. It’s enjoyable and smart. Please keep it on the air for those of us who enjoy good clean fun.
YES
We’ve really loved Downward Dog and are so sorry to see it has been cancelled! ABC exhibited poor judgment. My husband and I will follow Downward Dog to whatever station it goes to. We found it intelligent, inspiring, heartwarming and REAL.
I would watch this show until the end of time. I laugh out loud. I don’t usually enjoy talking dog shows/movies but this one I hold dear to my heart. Imagine my shock when I found out it was cancelled! This is why I pretty much have stopped watching television. You get attached to a program and they either cancel it or move it around so much you can’t keep track of it. This was the best show I’ve seen in a very long time. Stop making it compete with the big hitters (NCIS, Lethal Weapon) and see what happens.
It Still Wont Help The Show Is Not That Good In My Opinion

Personally, I loved this show. Loved the humor and thought it was great as a family show. With all the political garbage and unrest happening these days, it’s refreshing to watch something sweet and light for a change. Please consider bringing “Downward Dog ” back… Thank you
Downward Dog is a great show. most delightful, and a wonderful family show. should not be cancelled.
we can’t believe you cancelled the best family show !!!! it was a loving show espacially about the bound between dogs and their owners. what a great pemise for families.needs to be brought back!!!!!!!
So sad this wasn’t renewed. One of the few comedies I liked. Loved the whole cast, but of course, Martin stole the show. He sounds just like my dog. Heartwarming show which of course got canceled. Sick to death of investing time in shows – and liking them very much, only to see that the “demo” group isn’t paying enough attention to it. What about everyone else? Notice if you check the “would you watch Season 2” – you get really high positive numbers. Obviously they’re meaningless (as are the comments we all post here).
It is a funny, sweet show and deserves renewal. I would definitely watch it.
Definitely would watch Season Two! Such a good family program!
Oh, I thought the show was fantastic! It is one show that you can watch with your children. I love Martin. Also, his comments are very realistic. Please bring it back for another year!
Loved the show. They need to add another season this show is really a fun idea.
