Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

Damn shame, that in a time inunundated with realty tv this show has to be cancelled. Eureka is witty, interestingly intelligent and just “bleeping” awsome. Very sorry to se it go. Hope it ends with a bang. (Wouldn’t mind seeing gorgeous Ed Quinn again either).
I will miss this great show and hope that it will be picked up with another network.
I don’t watch a lot of TV other than movie channels and the very few cable channels with good programming. I programmed in the SciFi channel specifically because of Eureka, since most of its other offerings are pretty pathetic (one more haunted anything and I’ll hurl!) Looks like I’ll be deleting this network from my ATTUverse lineup. Nice going Comcast. Just keep producing more of those terrific zombie-ghost-bug eating-vomit hurling scaredy-cat “reality” shows and your entire company will be on a garbage heap of cheap shows and zero audience—brilliant.
This show is amazing. They should find a way to keep it on the air!
Don’t want it cancelled. Love the show. Please tell me it isn’t so. Watching reruns this day (Sunday) as I write. Think it a foolish venture to end such a great program. Not logical.
I absolutely LOVE this show – it’s so unique and the characters are fantastic!!! I am very sad to see it end!!!
everyone who cares should cancel their comcast subscription. go att, rcn, sat. or even the airways. show them that we subscribers have power.
UG!! I just finished Episode 63 (?), not realizing that was it. Then I came online to see if there would be another season. I’d heard it was scheduled to be cancelled, but the way the final season ended I figured there must be another season to finish it up. You’ve got to be kidding me, that was hardly a “true series finale”!!! I that left me was sad and frustrated. It just seemed like a season ender, not a series ender.
Sad to see it go
I just saw the Eureka population sign in an auction house in Chilliwack BC. Made me a little sad inside. Love the show, sad to see it go.
easy: It turned into a soap opera. It went from a “must watch” show to a “makes me sick to my stomach” show.
Love Eureka hate you are cancelling it
I love this show and am very sad to see it go.. It seems they keep all the crazy bug eating shows and cancle a good one.. I wish there was some way they could try and keep it…
I luv this show how can u let it go to the wayside, I am 62 yrs old can’t get enough of it, please find a way to keep it on.
Comcast is one of the worst companies in this nation. They make cuts to their staff, cut shows that people want to watch, and thus purchase cable. I despise them. I think I’ll write a letter.
