Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

I am sad to see a family type show depart because of numbers. Syfy had been starting to bring some good shows and then we find more reality shows its a shame that networks bleed and suck these type of show dry. I am disappointed that Eureka is departing but I would like to see the show go out on top. The writers seems to be bring back old stuff repeat stuff. The Beverly character needs to go I was so glad they moved past this now they bring her back…. The writers seem to be trying to coast along… Read more »
Comcast you are not my favorite, I enjoy this show. My family loves it. They did the same thing to me with the first Star Trek. There are so few shows left that are worth watching. It is no wonder I watch old TV shows on Netflix. I hope one day you realize your big mistake. The people are losing out all way around these days I am really P’od
Very upset to see the show go…..comcast are idiots…their service suck enuff as it is. Had to have a tech come out twice n first time they didn’t even show cuz no one put in the work order n second time no one showed and they had automated call to ask how was service from tech…..ha….lowlifes suits…and I agree wrestling has no business on syfi channel… but whenever show ends u know they have to somehow close timeloop from first episode where Zoe sees herself and dad driving opposite way so all those years and memories lost. Unless soo many… Read more »
Eureka was about the best show on Sci-fy, Comcast- ( a horrible cable provider) can continue to show wrestling and ghost hunters on Sci-fy but this viewer and his money will not watch those shows or buy from their advertisers. If you really want to see some great Sci-Fi they BBC they dont go cheap
Stands to reason, Comcast forces it’s customers to take channels they don’t want and when you find one you like they cut the quality and put it on a special channel package. I love Eureka have watched it from the beginning what a shame that Comcast thinks so little of Scifi viewers and even put wrestling on Sci fi which does not belong on that channel.
I can’t believe we finally get a true sci-fi show on the sci-fi channel and they cancel it. There are so many shows on the sci-fi channel now that have nothing to do with science fiction. In my opinion, this show was the best since SG-1.
I find it sad that the show has to come to an end. It was one of the more interesting of SyFy’s series that I’ve seen. I for one would like to thank the Cast and creators of the show for entertaining me for so many years. You Rock!!!
can another channel pick it up
this is as always a huge moron move on the parts of the suits.. I love this show
loved watching the show. will miss it terribly
This makes me hate Comcast even more…..can’t you go somewhere else or are they a monopoly?
As with any good family show it gets canceled. And they will certainly replace it with junk. All we can hope for is another network to pick it up. As for Comcast, I don’t think they realise (or care) that cancelling this show means viewers will go elsewhere for programing.
Love this show and soooo look forward to it every season. I think to cancel a successful show is quite stupid. Please re-think it and find a way to keep it.
PLEASE DONT CANCEL! !!
I am a huge science fiction fan, this show truly defined everything you could imagine for science fiction genre. Why not make a movie with about Eureka to generate finacial aid to keep the show going. The television show is better than most movies that they put out at currently in the theatres. Eureka is completely unique television show for anytime period. What a loss for syfy. Comcast has truly lost the golden goose of science fiction.
All I can say as a Canadian is what a bunch of losers to take away my all time favorite show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
