Though Eureka remains one of Syfy’s most popular TV series, the cable channel cancelled it earlier this week. What’s even more perplexing is that Syfy announced that Eureka had been renewed for an abbreviated sixth season last week. They even issued a statement to assure viewers that they hoped to continue the show beyond that. Why was it cancelled?
Eureka executive producer Amy Berg shed some light on the move via Twitter, indicating that Syfy didn’t want to cancel the show but financially, Comcast mandated it. She said, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”
The cast and crew were in the midst of filming the end of season five when the cancellation news came down. With such short notice, it seemed unlikely that they would be able to bring the show to a satisfying conclusion with such short notice.
Thankfully, Syfy has now ordered one additional episode so that, as Berg puts it, “we can end the series on our terms.” She indicated that she’s working on the series finale and it will be shot the week of the 21st.
For those keeping count, this means that there are 19 episodes of Eureka left; five more for this season and 14 for season five.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear there will be a true series finale? How would you like to see the show end?

We discovered this show years after it began – on Netflix – and became addicted!
Great fun, family entertainment! It is one of our “must see” shows now – so if it goes away, it will be a sad day.
I can’t belive that the most enteraning an well liked TV serise is being CANCLLED. It will cause most of us to do drastic things concerning who we give our money too. I am very unhappy with Comcast. Eureka will be sadly missed.
I am sorry to hear that he tv show is being cancelled, and I hope that Comcast declares bankruptcy and that someone else picks up the program.
Yes PLEASE
I am so pissed over this, they keep removing shows I really enjoy watching to replace it with some dumbass vampire twighlight wanna be show. They did the exact same thing with FIREFLY ! I to will be cancelling my space tv part of my sattelite programming. I am tired of watching start trek ( all series) , which is repeated over and over all day long. Now explain to me how they make money from old repeats as opposed to new material.
You cancel an awesome show like Eureka! Are you crazy? I don’t get why there is so much wrestling on a network called Syfy? At least put though idiots in space suits.
My family and I just found this series (we do not get the Syfy channel in Canada) and I have to say it is the best tv series I have seen in years. We have barely left the screen while catching up on the series and to find out this…well, needless to say. Here is big corporation taking away art, entertainment and jobs so they can make another record breaking quarterly profit. This is why I am starting to watch where I spend every nickle. If Comcast was in Canada, I’d boycott every product they were associated with.
É uma droga mesmo saber que cancelaram essa série 😐
This absolutely crazy to cancel such a great show. How about another network pick it up. Too good of a show to let it go. It is my families favorite. We need a a petition to keep it going. 🙂
I agree. I really liked this show. There are so many crap programs these days. I have seen this with Syfy when it comes to good shows and out of the blue, they are cancelled. What I am seeing is a trend here. If a show has to use CGI, then it is put under a microscope. What Syfy wishes to do is make programs and movies with dated and limited CGI. Series like, “Eureka”, “Stargate: Atlantis” demanded the use of somewhat updated CGI. This simply costs too much and as a result the partners abandon great titles and push… Read more »
I agree whole heartedly
I am really upset. This is one of the greatest shows since Star Trek. We need more shows like this one. There is just to much junk on tv today. I hope the management will reconsider canceling this show.
I hate to see a true Sci-Fiction show end. So much of the rest of it is monster or vampire crap or the end of the world scenarios or the cheaply made ghost shows. This has been one of the few shows to actually be about science and to be optimistic about our future.
Too bad some other network won’t pick it up. USA does pick up some things once in a while as does TNT.
Yeah, you’re right, I’ll miss an optimistic show like this, about science.
I am very upset that they are cancelling such a great show. There is so much junk on TV it is hard to find anything worth watching. Now that we actually have a decent, entertaining, well written and well acted show, they cancel it. Why doesn’t Comcast just sell Eureka to another network? I would gladly follow it to another channel.
This show is an inspiration to imagination and education. This is the type of show we need to have for our kids to watch to see what, with education and imagination, they can be. Too many shows are geared up to be gun fights, running from police and those things decent folks don’t do. The fact that the low profit margin is low does not show they are loosing money but that corporate greed is alive and well. Corporate CEO’s have to get their mega bonus!
Can’t believe they are canceling the show due to NO$$$.Come on…Hard to believe… Whatever.!!! Eureka is an awsome show with much humor and intellect. LOVE IT!!! Shame on Comcast for dangling a fantastic show and then taking it away.
I would love to see it end with a huge comet that is supposed to hit comcasts corporate office… Eureka rushes to save them… but FAILS TO DO SO…
because of this i will be cancelling comcast and switching to satilite tv.
